i think it's fine to look for an edward but it worries me how SO MANY girls look at him with such rose colored glasses. i mean, some of the things he does are sweet in this book and i realize that they are used to prove a point but if they ever happened in real life it would really really worry me.

like, i almost wish SM would have put a disclaimer in Eclipse that said:

"girls. i know you all love edward. but i used his over protection in the beginning of this book as a literary device. if a boy EVER controls you the way edward was with bella, for WHATEVER reason, RUN."

now i know i'm probably going to get fed through the grinder for that one, but it was just an example. you could say the same about bella and her breakdown and stuff.

you know?
Yes, your right he does try to control her which is unhealthy, but he also changes when he realizes that its hurting her by doing this. You can't blame the man for being protective. I'm how many guys have to protect their girlfriends from vicious revengeful vampires.
If your going to talk about how controlling is was you have to turn the coin over and look at what he learned and changed from that.

I dont think he necessarily tries to CONTROL her. He is just over protective. He is just so in love with her that he wants nothing to happen to her, he wants to keep her safe and he wants to be the one to do it. Does he go a little overboard? sure. But its not that he is trying to control her its just that he loves her so much.
let me clear this up.

i don't think he's doing it to try to control her. i'm perfectly clear on the WHY.

it's just that he doesn't have the right. he doesn't get to make those decisions for her.

i don't blame him for being worried, scared, jealous, etc. i would be too.

but i certainly blame him for his actions.

are they understandable? yes.

are they forgivable? absolutely.

do they make him a bad person, evil, a control freak? of course not.

does that make them ok? not at all.

the thing, though, that bugs me a lot, is that people say he "changed" so we shouldn't even count them, talk about them, discuss them, or consider them when considering him. that's ridiculous. of course we should. here's why:

he didn't change on his own. it's not like he was thinking "hmmm this is really upsetting the one i love and i really am not an authority over her, maybe i am not right all the time, and i made a mistake..."

it took bella's running away to make him see that he just COULDN'T do that anymore, because it wouldn't work. he didn't see the error of his ways, he saw that they weren't working.

not that i don't think he learned from it - i do. i just think that i would have thought a lot higher of him if he had backed off when he realized how much it was hurting bella.
"He was everywhere. The piercing sunlight turned my eyelids red, and the color fit, matched the heat. The heat was everywhere. I couldn't see or hear or feel anything that wasn't Jacob."

Exactly. I try to explain that to my Edward lover friends, and they don't get it. IMO, Edward isn't controlling because he likes being controlling. He's controlling because he worries about her. So my problem isn't with his motivations and reasonings; it's with his actions. It makes his actions forgivable (to some people), but it doesn't make them right (and, just so you Edwarder's know, I apply the same logic to Jake. Even though kissing her was a good thing, it didn't make the way he did it right. Just forgivable). Plus, Bella told him Jake was safe. She told him Jake wouldn't hurt her. I think he should trust Bella-- even though I can understand why he wouldn't. Bella doesn't always have the best sense of danger. But still... Bella had been hanging out with werewolf-Jake for months before Edward came back, and she was perfectly fine. In fact, she was in better condition than Edward left her in. So I kind of feel like... if Bella trusts Jake, that should be enough for Edward.

Edward admits to Jake in the tent scene of Eclipse that some of his reluctance came from jealously-- he says it was just a small part, but that it did play a factor at first (and although he says he wasn't very jealous, let's think of that in Edward terms. He tells Bella in Twilight that he was jealous enough to want to kill Mike. And Mike stands no chance at all. Whereas Jake is the one person out there who can even hold a candle to him. So imagine the jealousy Edward must feel with Jake if he was THAT jealous with Mike). I feel like some of his absolute reluctance to let her see Jake stemmed from his jealousy. So I wish that Edward wouldn't have let his pride (well, that's not the right word to use. But you know how most boys have extreme issues admitting when they are wrong or admitting when they are jealous? That's what I'm talking about here) get in the way. I wish he would have just been totally honest with her and said, "I'm worried that he'll hurt you, and I'm a little jealous. It makes me uncomfortable to know you are with him". That way, Bella could have had a real conversation with him. She could have explained to him that he was always going to be her choice and that she loved him and would always pick him. She could have explained that Jake wouldn't have hurt her, and then told him why. They could have found a way to compromise. Then again, Edward is a terrible compromiser, but I won't get into that, because it opens up a whole new topic of discussion. Anywhoo. If they would have done that, he might not have had to resort to his controlling little tricks. I wonder how much hurt could have been avoided for all 3 of them (Bella, Edward, and Jake, that is) if he could have been a little more open with how he was feeling and if Bella could have been a little braver in standing up for herself.

Oh and I definitely agree-- Edward didn't change because he thought he was in the wrong, he changed because it wasn't working. He says himself in the tent chapter that he finally gave in because he thought Bella would hurt herself trying to sneak out to meet Jake.

She's got a point, Hoffjuh. We can't post too much here, otherwise they might have to open Edward Forum #2! Then we wouldn't be able to say Jake is the only character with more than one forum! *Gasps* The horror! ;).

Just kidding, just kidding.

Haha. But I think that its only because those of us who are in the Black Pack are just so protective and loving towards our Jacob. We quite literally cant stop talking about him.

What effects you do think the loss of his parents at such an early age had on Edward's behavior toward Bella?

I imagine that losing the people you love the most is devastating, parents are very important, you know the people you look up to.

They're the ones who would sacrifice their own lives for their kid. That's what Edward does, he would sacrifice himself just to keep Bella alive.

Which this involves too much his overprotectiveness, and I agree with the others that have mentioned that Edward reacts this way for the reason that he worries and to lose another person that he truly loves, would be heart breaking.

-If only Edward was real to ask him personally...

Good question! I also think that the loss of his parents at an early age was part of the reason Edward didn't want Bella changed. He didn't have that long with his parents and therefore thinks it is important for Bella to spend as much time with Renee and Charlie as possible before she leaves.

I think the loss of Edwards parents at the early age is alot of the reason he is so protective of Bella..

He doesnt really know any other way to be... she is this fragile human life that is practically held in his hands. Trouble is he doesnt remember much of his human life... and he didnt really live much either.

He is virtually indestructible so it makes Bella appear even more fragile.

I definetly agree that Edwards actions where not great and that he was too controlling of Bella... But you have to consider the facts...
number one:
he is originally from a time where the men did make the majority of the decisions and look after their wives.
number two:
Edward lost his mum and from wat we know didnt date that many girls in his Life so he hasnt had much practice or training wen it comes to human girls.
and Number three:
Edward is a vampire...his world is not all butterflies and rainbows and he knows it... He just wants Bella to be sheltered from the full brunt of it for as long as possible.

so while Edwards actions are inexcussible you have to look at the thought and meaning behind the actions to fully understand them!

i couldnt have said it better myself.
Yes Edward made mistakes. He didnt have the right to tell Bella what she can and cannot do, we all understand why and no it doesnt make it right.
But with the reasons Edward.4.Bella pointed out i think we can sort of brush it off in a sense because he is 100+ years old. He is old fashioned, thats just the way he is..and in the end he realized that thats how he will lose her and so he did change for the better.

how about how much Bella could have spared, to Edward...Jacob. i personally believe it's all Bella's faults which then triggered Edward's faults and Jacob's faults. and then you have a big mess of wrongs.

i don't really know about Edward's parents, and the effect they had on him. generally, Edward views the human race as weak and fragile. what human could stand against a vampire, a creature that is powerful, puissant and potent and most of all indestructible. Bella, is even more fragile and absolutely delicate and soft. Just a soft touch of Edward's hands could break her. I think that's why he's really protective of her, "she's like a soap bubble to him, how do you care for them"--SM

However, I think Edward knows more than he lets on. I think he remembers his parents, but I don't think that it had much of an effect on him, AT least not a big one that made him who he is. He became a vampire, and while he was depressed as he roamed the earth for those 90 years he lived as a vampire, he, I believe still has human memories. But really though, when you can live for 90 years, your parents will be a faint memory, even stronger if you wished, but I doubt it effected him, much really.
