I thought a Red herring was a "false lead" like a clue purposely put there to put you on the wrong track or believe false evidence ...sort of like when Edward tracked Victoria to Brazil when she really went back to Forks. (sources of information where I have been told this definition of a red herring: Scooby Doo (don't diss the dog! ), Agatha Christie (sp? I'm bad with name spelling...), and English class disscusion of The Murder on the Orient Express (by Agatha Christie.)

In literature, a red herring is a narrative element intended to distract the reader from a more important event in the plot, usually a twist ending.

The term "red herring" originates from the tradition whereby young hunting dogs in Britain were trained to follow a scent with the use of a "red" (salted and smoked) herring (see kipper). This pungent fish would be dragged across a trail until the puppy learned to follow the scent. Later, when the dog was being trained to follow the faint odor of a fox or a badger, the trainer would drag a red herring (which has a much stronger odor) across the animal's trail at right angles. The dog would eventually learn to follow the original scent rather than the stronger scent.

In literature, the most commonplace use of a "red herring" is in mystery fiction. One particular character is described or emphasized in a way that seems to throw suspicion upon that character as the person who committed the crime: later, it develops that someone else is the guilty party.

I agree that the Volturi play by their rules. They wouldnt openly go against them.

I also agree that the Volturi are jealous of the size of the Cullen family and would rather have them eliminated.

In Eclipse, I think if the Cullens had gone to stop the young vampires from exposing them to humans, the Volturi could have used that as a reason to attack the Cullens.

Yes this is the Godfather!!!!! I thought about that too a while back making an analogy of the Volturi to that of the GodFather movies on this very string.... they work just like what I would expect the Mafia to be like..... and they're italian! heheheh No ethnic plugs here..just a simple observation. actually sicilians are more mob connected.. Hehehehe... I'm half sicilian and my dad swore up and down my mom's family had some connection being in the cement business in NYC..hhahahaha ...doubt very much my grandpa ever put anyone in cement boots.

Yes they do know it very much! That is why they scare everyone into following the rules. No one wants to cross them. And I agree that they are jealous of the Cullens and wouldn't mind if their family weren't just reduced by one or two or a few...

That could definitely be a plot line.... Aro wants Edward and Alice (I don't think he would care much about the others... maybe Jasper, but they have their own ways of making people do things).

Also... back to that possible red herring with Jane and Alec... why would they answer to Aro, Marcus, and Caius? Surely Jane and Alec could rule them if they wanted to (and I think Jane is that kind of power-loving person).

Heidi is the "bait" and Jane is Aro's secret weapon, so to speak. At least, thats how I see it.
