Jessica Stanley

Post by michL87 »

I started noticing Jess more after reading the first chapter of Midnight Sun. I felt as though we learned a lot about Jessica in this chapter, through what Edward heard her thinking.

I always thought she was one of those naturally bubbly people who is nice to the new girl because she loves meeting new people. But no - she was only nice to Bella because Mike was interested in Bella and she has a crush on Mike. (That sounds like I am explaining a soap opera!) And her thoughts were not nice about Bella. She is not as sweet and innocent as I originally thought ...

I suppose I considered her to be "clueless." But I do not think this anymore.

Once my mom is done reading Twilight (she is the slowest reader ever, so it might take a while) I am going to re-read it and look out for the manipulitiveness in Jess.

Here are some Jess quotes:

Everyone's looking at me today ,too, Jessica thought smugly in an aside. Isn't it lucky Bella had two classes with me ... I'll bet Mike will want to ask me what she's --

Oh, good luck, idiot! Jessica thought before answering [Bella's] question.

Then Edward thinks about feeling the urge to shield Bella from "the darker workings of Jessica's mind."

... And here I thought Lauren was the meanest. At least she didn't pretend to be nice to Bella. Maybe Jessica starts to actually like Bella later on? Bella really should stick to being friends with Angela, she is so nice.

Yeah it kind of makes you wonder if Jess and Lauren didn't have Bella to obsess about, would they be clawing each others eyes about. They are each such the poster children from Mean Girls.

I completely agree with the Lauren bit...I thought she was mean...but no!
I rather KNOW yoy don't like me them to have a hipocrit that will stab me in the back when I dont expect it like Jessica!

I'm surprised that Edward didn't warn bella about jessica. But, then again, Stephenie didn't know exactly what Jessica was thinking until Edward told her. LOL! I hope bella and angela become better friends, too.

I never liked her to begin with so the Midnight Sun clippet just reinforced my dislike of her. I ever liked Mike either so I'm glad that Jessica is kind of dragging Mike away from Bella alittle bit at a time.

I will admit though that I never realized just how envious and using she was of Bella till I read it.

I really hope that in Midnight Sun, we see Jessica's initial two-facedness fade away and that she becomes more of a real friend toward Bella.

Even though I've never especially liked Jessica (Even pre-MS), I do somewhat understand/feel sorry for her. Jessica's mother is described as being the town scandal, so she probably doesn't have a great home life. Those bad relations at home could foster a strong need for affection and attention, which she tries to get from boys (i.e. Mike).

We also have to remember that Jessica doesn't know anything about Edward's mind-reading, vampires, and other elements the readers are aware of. Jessica, with only normal human knowlege and ability, is understandably jealous when this "new girl" comes in and steals everything she wants from her.

So, though I don't approve of her being a jerk, I don't think Jessica's usually the meanest girl in school. She may have been bad that day, and had some darkness in her thoughts, but don't we all sometimes?

That's exactly what I thought too. I thought she was a girl who was just boy crazy and you know...

But when I read Edward's PoV, it surprised me a little!

I feel like Jessica needs a bumpersticker for her car. It should read, "It rhymes with witch" Really, I think that says it all.
