in a way her non-nurturing parents contributed to her character. i mean she wouldn't have some traits if she felt completely loved or safe all the time.... and because renee is so crazy and her dad is so far away and conservative she HAD to develop certain traits... so in a twisted way; her parents non-nuritionment helped bella become who she is....

twisted.

I agree. Bella says that Renee used to say that Bella was born a middle aged woman. That is a big part of her character. If it wasn't for them, she would not be the Bella she is. so I say, GO CHARLIE AND RENEE!

One time someone tried to explain to me why Edward isn't real. The next day, they "disappeared".

I don't think any child is better off because their parent(s) failed to give them the security they deserved! Bella turned out pretty good in spite of Charlie and Renee, not because of them. Poor parenting does not make strong kids; some kids just have the inner strength to rise above it. Unfortunately, most kids don't. Charlie and Renee are lucky they got Bella.

Well Charlie certainly tried for heavan's sake. He was probably about 20 tops when he suddenly became a father and then 6 months later the love of his life leaves him, he has sick parents to attend to and he probably had no idea what to do with himself. As the years past he probably tried to be closer to Bella but I don't think that Renee was too intent on that. She wouldn't really address Charlie as "your father" and the fact that Bella refers to him as Charlie and not dad shows that the environment that she was in growing up labeled him as "guy who shouldn't mean much to you." At least that's how I perceived it. Plus as it says somewhere on the boards here (I think in the rules part), neither Charlie or Renee are in danger of winning parent of the year or anything but it also doesn't mean that they are horrible parents.
Here, there, and everywhere...that's where you'll find me.

Okay, I'll lay off Charlie and Renee.

Here's another topic: How do you think Bella coming to live in Forks changed Charlie's life?

Uh, okay you guys, give Charlie a break.

SM said in an interview (it's somewhere on the Personal Correspondence) that the reason Charlie didn't go after Renee and Bella was because he was taking care of his parents. His parents were both really old and sick and had to be taken care of-- they were more or less dying when Renee left. So he decided he needed to take care of them. By the time they'd both passed away (I think SM said it was within a year of each other), he'd decided it was too late. That she'd already moved on.

Here's what SM said:

"The fact that Charlie didn't follow Renee when she left was about so much more than a job. Charlie's parents were both still alive, but just barely, when he and Renee met. He was responsible for caring for them. He didn't choose Forks, he chose his responsibility to his sick parents.

Charlie didn't have this much choice over her leaving. He didn't LET her go. She stormed out one night just as Bella did in the end of Twilight. His choice was to follow after her, but he couldn't leave his parents, he was very dutiful about his job, and his pride was injured. He stayed, and by the time Geoffrey and Helen Swan had died (within a year of each other) Renee had moved on so far it didn't seem like there was a point to following then."

So I don't blame Charlie for not always being there for Bella. For not always being the best father he could have. But he had to choose-- his ex-wife and child, or his parents? How could ANYONE make that choice? It would be so hard. Either way, you would hurt. It's kind of like Bella having to pick between Jake and Edward-- she would've hurt either way. Charlie did the best he could in the situation he was landed in. He couldn't leave his parents-- that's why he didn't move closer to her. And Renee hates small towns; she likes the city. Charlie hates the city. I know that's not much of an excuse, but can you honestly see Charlie somewhere like... Phoenix? Chicago? LA?

Charlie had to make a hard choice. Between the two, he chose what he felt was the lesser of two evils. And because of the choice he made, he couldn't move closer to Bella. Like I said, cut the guy some slack.

I just feel bad for Charlie. He's lost his wife and he's about to lose his daughter, probably permanently. He's lost both of his parents. He's so... alone. I feel bad for him.

before i move on:
i didn't mean that her parents lack of nuritionment made her a better person i mean that she developed traits that she needed to; around them. Sure, some are not the best but some make bella who she is and why she is that way. I agree, if bella didn't have a niche in her brain who knows what club she would be in now.....

and meganj--you said that before....

and to the question:

well for one, he had a cook and i think he felt he had another responsibility but enthusiastic and happy that bella wanted to move in with him. that SHE made that decision not renee or anyone else i think that was special to him. even though, he didn't know the original motive...

I like him. I think he is a pretty laid back dad... but still pertective. Hes just a dad.. Dads want there children to be happy, but sometimes they think they know what makes there children happy, rather then what really makes them happy. You follow??

My dad is laid back, way more then Charlie, but he still gives me 20 questions when I metion a boys name, but then I went to the movies with two guys I like and sat between them... my dad's response... did you kiss them?? No dad!!! lol

Er... no. No, I didn't. That was the first time I've ever posted anything in the Charlie section. I went back and checked the post, and it only posted once. So I haven't said that before.

Well, it certainly made his social skills unearth themselves. He's never really had to live with anybody or take care of anybody beside himself. Bella being there also had to rouse the part of him that has a need to protect those he loves. Bella didn't make that any easier on him every time she went catatonic, or "fell down stairs" or cliff-dived etc. I do think that Charlie gets to feel loved again too. Who in Forks is going to show him affection? Only Bella does that for him. I don't think he would have it any other way. Well, except I think he would get rid of Edward if he could. Most definitely would get rid of him.
