Question Posed:

What effect on Jacob's life has the absence of his mother had? Do you think that Jacob would be differnt now if his mother were still alive? How would his life be different?

I don't think Jacob would have been so...wanting...of Bella if his mom was still around.
The only other girls he has had in his life were his sisters.
When Bella came along it was something new and different.
Someone he could love in a none sisterly way.
Bella is not exactly his mother, but she is older than him and they have known each other for most of their lives. (all of Jacobs)
I think if his mother was still around, he would have been able to let Bella go.
If he lets Bella go he would have lost his mother and the most amazing girl he has ever met.
He would have to deal with two losses.
Thats no fun

I think that the absense of his mother caused him to mature quicker, and perhaps not be that dependent on people. Also he has to care for billy in the wheelchair, so he was not with the same responsibilities as a normal teenager.
If his mother was still alive, I don't think his personality would be all that different, I think he would still have the same cheerfullness about him....but then if his mother was still alive his sisters may still be living in La Push, and he wouldn't be the only person there with billy..

aw i think Jake would still be the sweet person he is.

some men who grow up without a female figure in the household become womanizing... but Jake had his sisters as well, and a good father, and turned out to be a pretty swell and mature kid.

since Jake has experienced death with his mother, i think his perspective on life is to live in the moment - because you never know when you'll go. since he's phased and conveniently finished his Rabbit, and all the stories of his heritage have proven true, he spends most of time protecting his people and Bella now...some kids who've lost a parent (whether they divorce or pass or what have you) beat themselves down about it when they shouldn't. likewise, Jake blames himself for failing to convince Bella to live, that's why i think he took the wedding announcement so hard, thinking about her impending doom (for lack of a better word) - and the fact that he'll see her differently if/when she becomes a vampire, a different person - it'd be just as bad as dying literally.
The Dark Knight = MASTERFUL.

Patiently waiting for ... Breaking Dawn and Twilight the Movie!

I think the absence of a mother forced Jake to grow up faster. He was forced to take care of his father, maturing him more quickly. If his mother was still alive his life would have probably been somewhat easier, until he turned of course, but he would have had more freedom to be a normal teenager.

At camp for two weeks...then I'll be back fighting Jake in full force...how can anyone say anything against him now???

I'm having such a hard time remembering how she died. Was it in a car wreck that paralyzed Billy? Is that right?

Assuming that's how, there are two ways she could have not died: survive the crash or no crash at all.

If his mom had survived the crash, chances are she would have taken care of Billy with a little help here and there from the kids. I think Jacob would probably still be more mature than your average teenager just for the fact that he almost lost his parents.

Had the crash never happened in the first place, he may have matured at a normal pace, therefore maybe not being so ready for such a deep love as he feels for Bella.

I think he may not have been able to handle being a werewolf as well. It may have taken him longer to get control over it.

I hope that makes sense.

I agree. But i think that he still would've wanted Bella, unlike what Lizardpolisher said. I don't think that would've changed anything. I don't think he would've talked to his mom about anything, to me it doesn't seem like his nature, so i just don't think that his feelings for Bella would've been different. But i agree a lot with Bella_S_Black. He wouldn't of matured like he had because he wouldn't have to take much care of Billy, his mother would've done that.

No effect at all, IMO.

SM said in an interview that Jake's mama died of natural causes. It was nothing horribly tragic like cancer or a car wreck or anything. She just passed away peacefully. And she died when Jake was young. His sisters were attached to their mom, which is why they never come visit; it's too painful to visit La Push. So, in the first place, Jake didn't know her very well. Plus Jake is naturally a very resilient person. He can bounce back well. He's done for awhile, then his natural cheerfulness makes him bounce back.

If his mom was still alive, I don't think he'd be different. He'd still be our Jake. He'd just be Jake with a living mother. But he might not be quite as independent as he is now. Billy gives him free reign; his sisters aren't around. That's allowed him to become his own person and develop a strong sense of independence. It taught him to learn to rely on himself.

His life would be the same. There'd still be Bella and the werewolves and the vamps. The only thing that would be different is that it wouldn't be just him and Billy. Mom or no mom, he and Bella still would have been friends. Mom or no mom, they would have fallen in love.

^ Wow, I don't pay attention. Well, yeah, that makes sense.

I used to have a friend whose mom died when she was about a year old. Whenever she talked about what people had told her about her mom, she was very detached.
