Well, I don't think she ACTUALLY knew specifically what Carlisle was.

I just think she understood that Carlisle could save Edward in a way that no other could. She was delirious, the only thing she was hanging onto was the need to have her son survive. She accepted whatever Carlisle could give to Edward.

All she wanted was for Edward to live.

Exactly. In a way she seems to be very much like Esme, in the mothering sense. It's sort of sad that Edward doesn't remember her too well. :(

I dont think she knew what Carlisle was. Personally, I dont think that she thought he was anything besides a human. I think she was just desperate for Edward to survive, so obviously she would talk to the doctor who had been treating her. In my opinion she just needed someone to promise her that her son would be ok so she would be able to have some peace of mind, even though she wasnt completely peaceful anyways.

Perhaps it was just that she knew he was a brilliant doctor with unusal talent.
But I loved that scene. I pictured it perfectly in my mind. From her trying to nurse sick Edward back to health, to her grabbing Carlisle by the shirt and almost threatening him to save her son.
It was just one of those moments in the book that made me love the parents in Stephenie Meyer's world

Hmmm. You're probably right. I hope he does. Maybe we'll find out in Midnight Sun.

But I don't think she knew what Carlisle was she just thought there was a way to save Edward that was only within Carlisle's power. Maybe by something he knew that the other doctors didn't.

I could not have said it better myself really. Carlisle was alone up until then, and the other vampires he had lived with before were back in Italy...so I doubt there was an actual knowing of what he was.

She was a mother...fighting to keep her son alive, at no cost...and I figured she saw in some small way that Carlisle would not only do everything in his power to save Edward, but actually pull through for her.

Of course she did not know what she was asking, and who she was asking at the time...not between the fevers and the panic of all the situation, so I wonder if she still would have asked the same thing from Carlisle...knowing she was basically going to get her son turned into a vampire?

Did she really want him to live at all costs? Even this one?
