Caius, or actually it's other form, Gaius, was an incredibly common name in ancient Rome. Julius Caesar's full name was Gaius Julius Caesar. There was Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, Julius Caesar's heir and the man who defeated Anthony and Cleopatra. There's also Caesar's father, Gaius Julius Caesar, and his brother-in-law, Gaius Marius. There was a senator Julius had prosecuted in 63 because named Gaius Rabirius. The husband of Caesar's great-neice Octavia was named Gaius Marcellus. Gaius Memmius was a famous orator of the time.

Just by looking at the years Caesar reigned in, you could probably find at least 20 different people with the name Gaius. Imagine how many there are looking throughout the history of Rome.

Ah, the evil lord of the Voultri. I think he and Alec and Jane will play a huge part in moving against the Cullens in Breaking Dawn. After all, we need a bad guy (or guys) for the next book.

Kacie wrote:From just googleing the name Caius, one description of some guy who lived in Rome way way WAY back in the day,

he was very pursuasive:
"It happened to be a sharp and sickly winter in Sardinia, so much that the general was forced to lay an imposition upon several towns to supply the soldiers with necessary clothes.(make the towns give their clothes to the army). The cities sent to Rome, petitioning to be excused from that burden (they said thats dumb we don't want to); the senate found their request reasonable, and ordered the general to find some other way of new clothing the army. While he was at a loss what course to take in this affair, the soldiers were reduced to great distress; but Caius went from one city to another, and by his mere representations he prevailed with them, that of their own accord they clothed the Roman army.

He was a super smooth orator. silver tongue. best car salesman you will ever know of.

second example: (Caius left..)
But he, finding how things were carried, immediately in anger took ship for Rome, where his unexpected appearance obtained him the censure (publicly reprimanding a public official for inappropriate behavior) not only of his enemies, but also of the people; who thought it strange that a quaestor (elected officials of the Roman Republic who supervised the treasury and financial affairs of the state, its armies and its officers) should leave before his commander. Nevertheless, when some accusation upon this ground was made against him to the censors (politician), he desired leave to defend himself, and did it so effectually, that, when he ended, he was regarded as one who had been very much injured.

That's very interesting. Maybe that's his gift in the book, persuasion and he only uses it when necessary. I never though much of Caius in general. He just seemed like the type to follow rules but since Aro said no he stopped pushing it.

The name Caius, as stated before, was very popular way way way back in the day. :D But that is a unique and interesting comparision.

Yes, evil lord is right. I think there might be a little fight between the Volturi and Cullens *SCREAM*. I hope it doesn't happen. As for Alec and Jane again *SCREAM* I don't want to see them, epsecialy Jane.

For some reason, I always pictured Caius to be a grumpy old man who has just swallowed lemon juice and has a twisted frown. Hehehe...
I also wondered what makes him so special that he has to be in the Volturi. Hmm...

Someone said in the beginning of this thread, that it was mentioned Caius was still weak in his powers compared to his Aro and Marcus. I remember reading something like that. Mostly I think the member who stated that Caius was merely concerned of a human knowing the secret, and that his disdain for Bella wasn't personal BUT if it was... perhaps, it was because Aro saw such serious potential in Bella as a vampire? Maybe he was worried there would be yet another, more powerful and/or talented than he.

Perhaps?
what do you think?

Jenna

At the end of Eclipse, Jane suggests that Caius may come to Forks to 'visit' Bella. Knowing from New Moon that the Volturi (family, not guard) rarely leave their home, and having caught a glimpse of Caius' character, do you think that this is likely to occur?

I've always wondered if the Volturi leaders (Marcus, Caius, and Aro) have last names. I can't recall if they're at all related, or they're just a bunch of random vampires. The Cullens all have taken the name Cullen (or Hale), so have the Volturi taken a second name to refer to themselves with? Or are they just too important for that kind of thing?
