So, this is sort o a...Fillionaire thread. Yay for Nathan Fillion and all things related. You know.

Fillionillion's IMDB

Anything posted there, so long as it pertains to The Fillion, is welcome. As well as upcoming stuff.

FLAN for those out of the loop (which I think is everyone else :wink: ) is Nathan Fillion's slip of the tongue, which has resulted in mass hysteria and the juggling of kittens many Fillion/Firefly fans calling themselves flans.

Oh, fandom.

Say it proudly, "I am Canadian a flan."

Well, I'm confused. But I suppose that is okay.

Sorry. Your confusion is my bad, I think. (Thanks, firefly, for the definition)

Confusion is okay. It builds character. Or... something...

"I am Canadian" is from that Molson commercial:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=JqUde5i4KbI

Nathan Fillion is Canadian (yay!) and he accidentally said "flan" in an interview when he meant to say "fan".

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/flan <-- Hee! Nathan Fillion made it into the wiki-dictionary, which, incidentally, I didn't know existed until now.

If you would like to see and hear him say "flan", clickit here (and then follow the site instructions).

How to make flan:

INGREDIENTS:

* 1 cup and 1/2 cup sugar
* 6 large eggs
* 1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
* 2 13 oz cans evaporated milk
* 1 teaspoon vanilla

PREPARATION:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. You will need 6 ramekins or other specialty flan cook ware and a large baking pan to put them in.

Pour 1 cup sugar in warm pan over medium heat. Constantly stir sugar until is browns and becomes caramel.
Quickly pour approximately 2-3 tablespoons of caramel in each ramekin, tilting it to swirl the caramel around the sides. Reheat caramel if it starts to harden.

In a mixer or with a whisk, blend the eggs together. Mix in the milks then slowly mix in the 1/2 cup of sugar, then the vanilla. Blend smooth after each ingredient is added.

Pour custard into caramel lined ramekins. Place ramekins in a large glass or ceramic baking dish and fill with about 1-2 inches of hot water. Bake for 45 minutes in the water bath and check with a knife just to the side of the center. If knife comes out clean, it's ready.

Remove and let cool. Let each ramekin cool in refrigerator for 1 hour. Invert each ramekin onto a small plate, the caramel sauce will flow over the custard.

2. Tie them to a chair. Suggest an after dinner activity
3. Watch Firefly.

5. Watch Firefly again.
6. Show them to their nearest Firefly vendor.
7. Pat yourself on the back.
8. Kick out the last remaining friend who wants to re-watch The Big Damn Movie. After all, you've been up for 16 hours past your bed time and you have to get to work.
9. Watch the cycle repeat itself.
10. Eat some flan. It really is delicious (if you make it right).

No not necessarily, I've seen it on other menus when I've been traveling. I'm not really sure where it originated.

It's a rather popular dessert in Spanish-speaking countries, but thanks to the shrinking world/global community, I think it's become pretty common or available at least in non-Spanish speaking countries as well.

It's kind of like creme brulee, only I think a little heavier and minus the burnt sugar on top.

From Wiki:

Etymology 2

English, from a slip of the tongue by actor Nathan Fillion

Pronunciation

IPA: /fl n/

Noun

flan

1. a fan of US TV series Firefly; a Browncoat
