Jacob Black-more or less appealing/interesting?

Direct quote from the Q&A from Stephenie's speaking engagement at BYU.

Ooh does this mean Jacob's going to do something heroic in Eclipse? Sounds that way. I love Jacob; he's my hero already. I hope he doesn't do something like sacrifice himself to save Bella and then die. :(

That quote made me think, too.

I'm finally starting to like Jacob a lot, so yes, let's hope that he does something awesomely heroic without dying.

Hmm... I don't know... fandom can be a pretty crazy place. And by "crazy" I mean highly irrational.

Yes, I was thinking that too. I'm hoping he won't go overboard, though.

What?? DIE?!

I really like Jacob. I hope he doesn't do anything well, rash. He's such a self-sacrificing person, I just hope he doesn't overdo it.

I have very ambivalent feelings regarding Jacob, so I don't know... I surely don't want him to die, but that was not my first thought when I read that either! I was thinking more like.. Uhm... I don't know.. That he does something sweet, or is able to be Bella's friend in one way or another. My personal favorite, which would make me love him (now I just like him), was if he fell in love with someone else but Bella. But I'm pretty sure that's not happening. Not yet at least.

But die? Remember, Stephenie loves Jacob and her pack of teenage werewolves, so why would she kill him off? As she has said herself (and which Alphie has repeated in numerous threads), she likes happy endings! And I don't think Stephenie would be very happy if one of her favorite characters dies! Also, Alphie has said that so far, Eclipse is her favorite book out of the three! Do you think it would have been if Jacob died? Once again, I don't think so.

Sorry about that long rambling. At least I got my point out there (I think).

I just snorted my coffee out of my nose. It sure can! I've lived through the crazies in four fandoms from people who swore the characters were real to people who are still convinced that certain characters are destined for each other.

I look at it this way, there are always the characters that appeal to you more than others. For example, Emmett doesn't do much for me, but I don;t think he is a super strong psycho hell bent on a Cullen Clan takeover.

I was in the room when Stephenie made that comment.

Saying 'a hush fell over the crowd' is putting it lightly.

Wow... this is upsetting. I really like Jacob... I have a very similar relationship with a friend of mine. I really hope he doesn't get killed. If he does, it'll be the first time I'll cry in the whole series.

I guess one either takes heart or runs screaming for the hills when looking back at other fandoms that still exist and still have 'shipper wars (among others); Twilight is a baby compared to some. How long have Logan and Scott gone at it? I suppose it helps that they both seem to be immortal or very slow aging, at least.

(on a more serious note, I think this is how stories stay alive -- because people talk, argue, and generally care too much about them.)

Emmett doesn't do much for me, but I don;t think he is a super strong psycho hell bent on a Cullen Clan takeover.

What? I thought he and Rosalie had plans to rule the world (and you know it's all her idea).

Masochist or Whedon-trained as I am, I'd say that's the _perfect_ reason to kill off a character.

The ones no one loves or will care about or remember are cannon-fodder; it's the ones that are beloved or at least make some sort of impact that create the emotional fallout that IMO makes a good story (provided it's well-written and all that).

Not that I particularly want to see Jacob (or anyone else) gone. He had me at "Who's afraid of the big, bad wolf?".
