Haha!! Loved. It.KT wrote:I'll admit, I loved Edward when I first read Twilight (and a small part of me still does, in a way), but I have definitely shifted my thoughts on that after reading New Moon and Eclipse.
New Moon is when he started to get on my bad side, first by the horrible way he left her (No warning? Ditching her in the woods? Come on Ed! What's that about??) and then steeling/hiding her pictures and the CD he gave her. It REALLY made me mad when he did that. What right did he have to take her things? I know he was trying to do the selfless thing and leave Bella alone for her own good- I honestly think he was right to do that- but sometimes I think he should have stayed away. I have been annoyed with him since he came back into the picture at the end of New Moon. I felt like we were really starting to get to know Bella and see a different side of her, a more independent (and much less obsessive) Bella who was learning to laugh again, and love again. Then suddenly Edward's in trouble and Bella has to run off to save him, abandoning all the progress she had made. It REALLY irked me how easily Bella let him back into her life. It's like she can't say no to him. It's a bit unsettling.
I may have been able to get over my ill feelings toward Edward if it weren't for his behavior in Eclipse. All the time he spent trying to keep her away from Jacob- dismantling her truck? Bribing Alice to kidnap her?? Unbelievable!!! And the worst part about it is how Bella never really gets mad at him about any of it, she simple lets him control her in that way, and she ends up treating Jacob- her best friend- very badly this whole time as a result of Edward's power over her. Also the part when Edward gives Bella the diamond heart-shaped charm and puts it on the bracelet that Jacob made her for graduation gift- that was a very very not ok thing to do in my eyes. And then he goes on to force her to agree to marry him even though she ABSOLUTELY does not want to at. all. The way she reacted when he first showed her the ring had me nearly screaming at my book "Say no Bella! Throw the ring at him and RUN!". She obviously does NOT want to marry him and I know she doesn't really want to become a vampire, all she thinks about is wanting to make Edward happy and wanting to be able to be with him forever (in her eyes immortal = forever, which why she thinks she wants to be a vampire).
When I go back and re-read the books I find evidence of this obsessive relationship even in Twilight where I first thought I loved Edward, in the way Edward is constantly holding on to Bella... or carrying her... or wrapping his arm around her waist... as if she cant even stand up on her own. Overall Edward is nauseatingly overprotective and extremely possessive of Bella which I DO NOT admire or like in any way. And Bella's inability to say no to him is also a factor in my dislike for him. Edward is a drug for her. The two are obsessed with each other in a way that drives me crazy as a reader.
And that concludes my Edward rant for the day.
I'm on your side girl. If any guy tried to treat me like Edward treats Bella, I'd move to a different country! Creepy...
