i just want to make it clear that i am aware that its not really bella's page but a role-player from the myspace world. but this profile is the one more like bella and it was recommended by the aptly named we recommend group on myspace. i know its not really bella, but i love being a part of it anyway. like i said in another thread, i ALWAYS embrace the insanity!!! because im quirky that way!! :D

oh, at least I understood that from the beginning...! :P

but don't worry - you're not alone! where's the fun in being sane anyways?!

(you should have seen the thread where I, White Shadow and some others all of a sudden went totally off topic and started discussing how nice it is to be crazy... lol! )

She arrives in Forks with very little luggage from the sounds of it. She doesn't seem too caught up with material things generally. And while the Cullens have some treasures that they must take when they leave each time, they clearly are not terribly tied to material things.

The same holds true for human ties for Bella. She clearly has no friends from AZ that have even been worth a passing thought, let alone an email or phone call. Her Forks High friends are much the same ----- she's happy enough to have them around when and to the extent she needs them, but really, it's more of a "take it or leave it" deal to her. She doesn't seem terribly fussed about making friends, and in fact, Angela's biggest selling point in Bella's eyes is that she is quiet and lets Bella just sit with her own thoughts much of the time.

Genealogically speaking, it's very odd for her to have NO living relatives other than her parents, but it seems that too is the case. No living grandparents. There is no mention of either Renee or Charlie ever having had siblings and so there are no aunts, uncles or first cousins. Perhaps she has some 2nd cousins or great-aunts around somewhere ...... but nobody too close that's for sure.

I agree with Ellabelle ---- clearly, Bella was not meant to stay human. <*grins*>

I'm just going to add a very large chear to that!

:o < me chearing!!!!

Not to ignore the insanity tangent, but I'm going to drag you guys slightly back on topic :) I don't remember who was getting at this point, but just because Stephenie didn't write them in, it doesn't mean that Bella didn't think about people from pheonix. It would take just a little bit of effort to have a casual reference to someone from home. ie: 'Oh Angela reminds me of so and so' would require it's own tangent of who so and so is, how Bella knew her and several other details that would all just take away from the flow of the action. It's entirely possible that there were references originally and they got cut out in editing for practicality. Stephenie's a self-proclaimed character based writer so I don't think she could write in just a random reference to someone without that person's own novella to go with them...talk about baggage!

Anyway, I think Bella had versions of Angela and Jessica back in Pheonix. Friends who were there for the sake of having people to hang out. No best friend, since that was Renee, just friends for girl talk and hanging out with. Easy to replace, and so not worth the effort to mention. Also, Bella's old school was HUGE, and in my experience the bigger the school the more people you recognize, but the less you talk to and the less well you know them.

i do agree that any reference to bellas previous school or previous friends were probably cut out for practicality, but at least ONE reference would have been nice to make bella a slightly more realistic character, since its kind of weird that she seems to have barely any connections to her life in phoenix, like she got amnesia or something (not that bella isnt realistic, but whatever)

something like:

"____ was the star 4.0 GPA scholar at forks high. there was only one. every high school needs to have their token super nerd, but its like there's only one for every 200 people or so. back in phoenix there were about six, all of whom we only knew by name but not necessarily by face. i was a little disappointed that i wouldn't get to see them duke it out come graduation over who would be valedictorian and salutatorian."

not even real names would be needed, but just a brief mention, filler extra stuff.

Yes. A little something to give her roots or ground her past a little better. OTOH, not knowing any more than what we absolutely need to (i.e., Bella's old friends/acquaintances are not relevant to the current story, so we don't hear about them) gives the writer more freedom, if she needs to fill in or use something later on that requires more of a construction of her past because it's rather vague now.

you know, I just can't see why people are bothered by this. I'm not. seeing as Bella is the kind of person she is, I think it would be very out of character for her to mention people from her old school. she just don't think that much about them. and when she does, it's probably not in any situation where we hear her thoughts! it's just not important. Bella didn't have any close friends in Phoenix, and the one thing that still gave her some connection to Phoenix, her mom, has now moved. Bella is through with Phoenix, and I get the feeling that once Bella is really through with something, she won't bother about it again.

also, even if she did have close friends, I don't think she would talk or think alot about them either. I can't find the exact quote right now, but early on in Twilight she says something along the lines of "I'd always been good at pushing unpleasant things away". at one thread, people have been discussing that that may be the reason why Edward can't read her mind, and no other vampire-powers regarding the mind works on her! and you see it in New Moon as well. after a short while, Bella pushes the "unpleasantness" (this time it was when Edward left - something more than just "unpleasant" if you ask me...) away and goes into her zombie-state. she just has a really private mind, where a lot of weird things is going on....

if she didnt want to think about it at all....actually that just sends me messages that bella had some weird traumatic past there or something lol.

but even the most introverted people think about random stuff of the past sometimes. random memories are triggered by the most random things, and since she lived in phoenix for so long you'd think a phoenix memory would pop up sooner or later, especially from her school since school itself is like 70% of a teen's life.

I agree with again. Surprise, surprise :D Lol.

Bella just didn't have friends like that in Phoenix. And yeah, it's weird to us. But not to her. That's just the way she is. She doesn't seem to need friends like other people do. I think that becoming close to Edward and the Cullens was very out of character for her.

You make an excellent point Kissa01, about her private mind. I think maybe it's not just her mind that's private but that her whole personality is really private, if that makes sense. I don't really know how to explain it better than that :? :D

Bella just isn't a normal teenager. Her life isn't about friends and socialising. I think she's a lot more different than she first appears.
