In my opinion, I don't think he ever really fully understood. I bet he's got the whole gist of it, being to read minds and all, but I still feel lilke he doesn't truly know the damage done to Bella.

Because when Jake is showing Edward what Bella looked like while he was gone, it looked like Edward had never really seen those images of Bella before. Perhaps he had, and the pain was just too great for him, so his face always looks like he's in pain when he sees that, but I'm not sure.

Also, at the end of Eclipse, Edward says, "I've never seen you in so much pain." And then in her mind, Bella thinks, But I had known worse pain.

But I have no doubt that Edward will never leave again. He knows enough that the pain was too strong for both of them, and he's never going to put them through it again.

But I'm not sure about the answer to the question...it actually bugs me a lot too, I wonder about that frequently.

My personal opinion, is that Edward basically understands. I don't think he can ever understand just how much it hurt her, but I think that he knows she was a mess when he left. For instance, there's that scene in Eclipse where Bella's all upset, (I'll leave it out for those of you who haven't read Eclipse, but if you don't know what I mean, just PM me and I can tell you.) about Jacob, and Edwards trying to comfort he, and he says "when I left, I left you bleeding. Jacob was the one who sewed you up. That's bound to leave a mark on both of you" I think when he says that he's trying to let Bella know, that he does understand just how much he hurt her when he left. Although, just like I think Edward can never fully understand how much it hurt Bella, I think that she can never fully understand why he left her. I will be curious though to check out everybody else's opinions :)

Oh, also in reply to irunwithvampires, I agree that I don't think Edward would ever leave again. Like at the end of New Moon, when he's talking to Jacob and says "Thank you so much for everything- for keeping Bella aklive when I didn't" and when Jacob says "I didn't do it for you" then Edward "I know. But if there's anything I can ever do to thank you.. just let me know" and that's when Jacob is thinking about Edward leaving and Edward sees that so he say "That's not my desicion" then Jacob. "Then who's is it?" this part is where I think Edward would never ever leave again, because he says "Hers. I'm a fast learner Jacob Black. I know how much it her when I left, and I'm her untill she orders me away." (not an exact quote) I think that line right there, is when you fully realize that Edward does at least mostly understand and would never leave again.

I agree with this. I think Edward knew all along how desperately heartbroken Bella would be when he left her. The difference is at first he thought it would be the best thing in spite of her pain. Now he knows that it did nothing productive except to make them both miserable. Well, okay, not nothing. It did make her fall for Jacob and then be able to make a clearer choice when she did finally agree to marry Edward - but that's a different thread. Anyway, I guess I mean that now he knows that the worst pain for Bella is being without him. Worse than vampire-ism and losing your soul, family, and friends.

I think Edward understands now after Jacob let him see Bella in his thoughts when Sam found her in the woods and while he was away... Bella said the pained look on his face was like when they were in Italy and Jane was playing her game...
"Bella... are you sure? Did you make the right choice? I've never seen you in so much pain-"
I touched his lips. "Yes."
"I don't know... If it hurts you so much, how can it possibly be the right thing for you?"
"Edward, I know who I can't live without."
"But..."
"You don't understand... I have to be with you. It's the only way I can live."
He pulled me closer, "'I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!'"

Edward does understand Bella's pain. He went through it as well whn he left, and he had the guilt of leaving on top of that. Also, on one of the PCs doesn't Stephenie Meyer and indeed Edward say that he would feel more human emotions stronger and more completely than the average human? (Sorry if that's wrong, by the way). He was coming back, which makes me think he was going through the same thing as Bella. He didn't even have a friend like Jacob to use as a support. He would have felt completely alone

I don't think at first edward understood bella's pain. the reason why is because he sees himself as a monster and he didn't understand why bella could love him. Also i don't think bella truly understood why she was in so much pain. i think in a way they both didn't want to admit that they loved each other because neither of them felt good enough for the other.

I believe edward started to realize the pain he eflicted when they were on their way home from italy and bella would not sleep and would not keep her eyes of him. And then when they were talking in Bella's room when they returned he saw it in her face, and heard it in her voice when she was explaining things to him.

Then in eclipse when jacob came to the school and sent images to edward of bella broken.

Edward does understand bellas pain and he feels horrible and he will never forgive himself.

Yeah, i see where you're coming from KaseyHeartEdward. I never considered that he could have realised the pain halfway through. (Bad day). Thanks, you've persuaded me to your view, which from what my friends say is not the easiest thing to do. Of course i don't know what they're talking about :? x

jacob and charlie

I think Edward has a good idea of the pain he caused her, thanks to Jacob. I think that Jacob, for once, did the right thing by making Edward really face the pain that he caused Bella and the state at which he left her in. I get that Edward was trying to be noble (we all make mistakes, right?) and wanted to keep her safe and out of harms way, but he had aboslutely no idea what he was doing to her. I think he'll never understand the full extent of what he did to her, but I definitely think that with the help of Jacob, and Alice reporting back a bit from what she heard from Charlie, that he's been able to get a glimpse of it.

i agree with you about this... i think he knows along the line of what happened because of jacob.. and im very glad he did it because what edward did to her just can't go unnoticed and like it never happened.. im not saying two wrongs make a right, but there should be SOME consequences. geeez.

she should have hit him like she hit jacob... maybe with a baseball bat this time though ... loll
