Quote foreshadowing.

Post by Tracy89 »

I was scanning both New Moon and Twilight tonight, and I thought how fitting the quotes in the beginning of the books were to each book and the series so far.

Twilight:

"But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,
thou shalt not eat of it:
for in the day that thou eatest therof
thou shalt surely die."

Genesis 2:17

New Moon:

"These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which, as they kiss, consume."

Romeo and Juliet, ACT II, Scene VI

Does anyone else think that they foreshadowed events in the books so far? Or maybe even foreshadow what is to come in future books?

The quote in Twilight can be viewed in so many ways to me. I'm am very far from being religious so forgive me! Could Bella be the fruit in which Edward is not supposed to eat? He had to make a decision if he wanted to get close to Bella, or if he wanted to eat her. Does it count as the same? Would Adam have been punished the same if he just picked the fruit and not ate it? The instructions clearly state that if he eats the fruit he will die, whether it be spiritually or physically. Perhaps the quote relates to Bella. If you follow Edwards thoughts on losing your soul once becoming a vampire, the death could very well mean spiritually. If Bella is the one picking the fruit ( Edward's way of life), then it would mean the separation between her and god.

I won't go to deeply in the New Moon quote right now because it's 5 am, and I really should get some sleep. However, the thought of "These violent delights have violent ends" scares me a bit. We know how powerful Romeo's love is, and that the play ends in tragedy. In New Moon they began to understand how strong and powerful their love is for one another, the violent end never came. Was the tragedy in New Moon them being separated for some time? Or has the violence yet to come?

Anyone have any thoughts on the quotes? Also, forgive me if this is already being discussed somewhere.

Wow! I never even thought about going that far into it! It could be foreshadowing, but that would sort of stink. The whole point of the quotes though was to relate a quote from another book to this book, so it makes sense.

I'm also curious about what people think the quote might be for Eclipse. Anyone have any ideas?

If it's following the whole Wuthering Heights connection for Eclipse I think the quotes that would fit best would be these:

" . . . he's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same, and Linton's is as different as a moonbeam from lightning, or frost from fire."

OR

" . . . treachery and violence are spears pointed at both ends; they wound those who resort to them worse than their enemies."

I think the second one might fit well with what might happen in Eclipse.

Stephenie Meyer chose those quotes because they relate to her stories

For Twilight to me Bella and Edward are forbidden fruit to each other, not just Bella that Bella is forbidden to Edward

but that to her, she can't have him either

I read somewhere that Stephenie Meyer had picked another quote for New Moon from Romeo and Juliet, but changed her mind to choose the more "violent"

I can't wait to see the Wuthering Heights quote, there are so many to pick from and those are really good examples Tracy

I may skim through the book again to see which quotes she may use

In the twilight quote, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil stands for temptation, the way that Bella is a temptation to Edward. When it says that "thou shalt surely die", it does not actually mean death. In the Bible, it is referring to a spiritual death, meaning that Adam and Eve and all of their offspring will be separated from God. But in Twilight, I think that it means that Edward and Bella will be separated, or maybe just that there will be terrible consequences which will be equivalent to or worse that death. And obviously, Bella and Edward being separated is worse that death.

It could also mean Edward worrying over Bella loosing her soul and being cut off from humanity and all she loves etc

That's what I was thinking, if you go by what Edward thinks about her soul.

I'm sure nothing horrible will happen, SM likes happy endings remember? The quotes in the book have just been bothering me lately...like I'm missing some important understanding. Then again I'm trying to bring a theory out of every word in the book. ;) August can't come soon enough! I can't wait to see what the next quote will be...and of course read the book.

Yeah I can't wait either! :)

i'm more interested in the quote than the preface....haha i'm a weirdo

I was hoping that someone would have known what it was, but then I realised that only the first chapter was in the special edition NM, no preface or quote :( Not that I could have read them anyway
