I could compare vampires to virus, for example, we know virus are not considered living creatures (at least they don't have a "LIFE" like all the living beings) but they are a different kind of creature that don't need to feed but they need to parasite a living cell for reproduction (vampires need to feed but when they do it, they can turn their prey into another vampire, so this is kind of a reproduction tactic).
So, if vampires and virus are born, reproduct, and die, we can't tell that they're not alive, they're just a different form of life.

I haven't read all the posts but I don't think they're dead, I agree with most people that they're human life is over but that doesn't mean that you're dead...

if you're Christian like I am, you'll probably agree that you don't actually die, your human life may be over but your spirit still lives on (waiting for judgement day etc.). In the same way, the human life of a vampire may be over, but their soul, mind, spirit still lives on, its just that when humans die, their bodies rot and their spirits etc. go wherever they go after they end their human life, but in a vampires case, they live on in another form.

But, to be honest, we can't judge if they're actually dead or not because as far as I'm concerned, the only person who has experienced death and has been able to tell anyone was Jesus. He died for our sins, then came back to life again, so unless we know exactly what death is like and have been through it, you can't say what is dead and what isn't.

So, theoretically, they're not actually dead, just another form of a human. All the human traits are there, just hidden beneath the vampire traits, and when you experience human experience, e.g Edward with Bella's love, then they gradually resurface as Edward's did.

hm. that's an interesting question.

i think the wolves are, at least in some way, right. Vampires are dead, if you think that somebody is dead as soon as his heart stops beating.
but on the other hand they're wrong. Vampires talk, move, love. so they aren't dead. they are, in some very special way, more alive than humans. they move faster, are stronger, apprehend more because of their stronger senses and their gifts, have deeper emotions.

actually, you can't decide for one possibility. both opinions are right and false at the same time. we should 'invent' another word because neither dead nor alive is right. they are undead. or unalive. just vampires.

hm. what do these lyrics make me think of? *pondering*

Personaly speaking, I think they are pretty much dead...I mean they can walk around and stuff but inside, they are spiritually dead. In a sense, I agree with Edward....I think they have no soul, they are just the walking dead...They are suppose to be six feet under because their spirit has moved on but they are still moving around aimlessly....hopefully that made sense :) .

ps. this is not to offend anyone, its just my personal opinion

Although to Jacob, vampires are dead, I believe it is not so simple.

There are definitely some similarities: cold, can't sleep, don't need to breath....but in other areas, they are closer to alive; Vampires still need food, they think & love & run, they don't have blood, but they do have fluids, they must have some sort of physical or mental chemistry & hormones, because they experience desire, arousal & emotions. They can even reproduce their species by biting.

Edward tells Bella that she will still essentially be herself; as much as he wants her not to become a vampire, he doesn't suggest that it is a death. It is certainly not a choice I would like to see anybody make in real life, but I don't see it as death.

Yes, but plants are a whole different species.
Their definition of "alive" is much more different than ours.
I believe that vampires are dead in our species, but alive in theirs.
Actually, plant definition of alive is almost the exact same as a human (respond to environment, reproduce, ect), just without the ability to think or react to situations because they have no situations. A beating heart is in no definition of alive, other than the human and animal one. Saying that, a vampire would be a different species, but with the same qualifications of life of every other multi-celled organism.

This brings up a good point too ... Do vampires have souls? Is a soul what makes someone alive? A lot of religions view that to be the case ... and a lot of other vampire myths (Buffy's Angel springs to mind) talk about vampires having the ability to have souls.

Personally, I like the idea that they're in a sort of stasis. Cryogenic, almost, due to their coldness, not having to breathe, no heart beat, etc. To me, dead is dead. Gone from the living realm, not interacting with the living, not having thoughts and personalities ... The Cullens don't fit any of those three criteria.

So alive!

Post by Twilightbaby3214 » Tue Jun 17, 2008 10:54 am

I believe that they are trapped or frozen in a certain stage of death. Like while the person is being drank from, the person is dying. But if the vampire stops drinking then the dying process freezes and the person in converted.

I know its pretty lame but I was thinkning about it for a long time.

Also they are not really that different from us humans. They breath, feel, act, hate, and love.(sorry, another theory) If anything they are more alive than we are.

I mean think about it. They are like a million times stronger than we are, they run way faster and they have abilities that many of us envy.

So yes, I belive that they are VERY much alive.

scientifically speaking (i think, haha),
im going to have to say vampires are dead.
they are in a human body (well.. because they were HUMAN before).. and none of the systems of their body are working. all they do is drink blood to.. NETSPEAK IS SO UNATTRACTIVE PLEASE FIX ME!? just take care of their thirst.

idea: heres a NEW question:
where does the blood go after they drink it?? or what do they use it for, other than satisfying the thirst?

okay, back on topic,
i think.. religiously? or im not sure.. just, okay, anway,
i think because they are "alive" then .. they are?

who knows?

all that is for sure is that they are not humans. so maybe they are dead as humans. but alive as vampires.

ultimately meaning they are alive,
just in a VAMPTASTIC form.

Mod Edit: We are only debating one topic at a time in
this forum, so please don't start any additional questions!

We will be debating a different topic every week. If you
want to propose a question for future discussion you may
do so by emailing

And to answer your question, the blood they drink is used
in their bodies like fuel. It diffuses through their veins but
doesn't circulate. This question is answered by Stephenie

the Lex front page)

Well, i am totally confused about my opinion :/

because they can

- move
- talk
- show emotions etc

but, they can't breathe. But if you can't breathe doesn't that mean your basically dead?

Uh... my brain hurts.
