Were you surprised at how undiscouraged Jacob remained, despite Bella's assertions that she loves only Edward?
Hell no! Jake knew she loved him too. He had to make her see that. It's not his fault that she didn't realize that. And he's trying to save her life-- he thinks becoming a vampire is the worst fate imaginable. He thinks it's horrible. He thinks Bella is making a mistake. He feels like he's losing his best friend. He hates Edward and feels like Edward doesn't deserve her (quite right, IMO). He thinks he can give her a more complete life (which, IMO, he can. Kids, a family, her friends, her parents, getting older, death, the whole enchilada). Edward takes away everything from her, in Jakes (and my) eyes.
Of course he's going to fight for her. Friends don't give up on friends, especially when you think they are doing something stupid (like throwing their life away to become a monster). I mean good heavens... put yourself in his shoes. If your very best friend in the entire world, or someone who you loved very much, was going to do something you thought was really stupid and life-changing and permanent and idiotic, would you try to stop it? If they were throwing their life away? Would you at least try to talk them out of it, since you care about them? Most people would. Jake reacts in the way most human beings would react. I don't know how people can blame him for persisting-- how could you live with yourself if you just stood by and watched the person you loved most throw their entire future away?
How did you feel about the kiss? Were you shocked like Bella, or did you see it coming?
-- I was so happy.
SOOOOO happy. It's my favorite part of the entire book. I'd been waiting for it the entire time I was reading, I knew it would happen sooner or later. I was so, so, so, so, so unbelievably happy. When I'm sad, I always read that chapter. And it cheer me up (and makes me bawl). It was
amazing. I was like, euphoric when I read it.
Everyone reacted so differently to the kiss. What did you think about Bella's reaction? Jacob's? What about Charlie's? And how did you think Edward was going to react?
Bella's reaction? Meh. At least she realized she loved Jake too.
Jacob's? I thought it was a little low for him to pretend to be suicidal. But, again, at least it made her see she loved him.
Charlie? Hell, Charlie
should be mad at Edward. If you were in Charlie's shoes, would you like Edward? After seeing what he did to her in New Moon? Charlie is still in the dark, people. He doesn't know why Edward left. All he knows is that he did, left Bella pretty much catatonic, and came skipping back into the picture like nothing had ever happened. Of course Charlie's not very happy.
Edward? Gosh, his reaction irked me. "I can be noble, Bella". Blah, blah, blah. I felt like he was trying to paint himself in a good light and what he did made Bella feel worse. Then again, everything about Edward annoys me. So maybe I'm not the best person to ask about him

.
Did you feel horror at the news of Jasper and Emmett's bet, as Bella did?
Yes. Very much so. I thought it was funny, but horrible all the same.
As you read the end of the chapter, what did you think had Bella particularly concerned when she mused, "Was there a human experience I was not willing to give up?"
Kids, maybe? Or sex. She's all about sex, apparently. Lol
