Q&A Help

Post by Alphie »

If you have a quick question about something that you think another member could answer but it doesn't quite call for it's own topic of fit anywhere else, use this place to talk about it. Should something start to gain attention, add it to the request a topic thread and we will give it a stand alone thread.

Chapter Names

Post by Moonpetal Lily »

After a few chapters, I began to notice a pattern. Inserted, Overheard, Abandoned... every chapter ends in -ed. It seems to be past-tense verbs. Does anyone have ideas on why Stephenie did this? (and if someone asked at a signing, that'd be awesome^^) I never had the feeling that Wanderer was looking back on this entire experience- from the epilogue's time, perhaps- so I can't figure out the purpose.
She wanted to escape...but is the alternative really better?Angel (a fanfiction)

^^I think because the book is written in past-tense, the chapters fit. Maybe because it's a sense of defeat, like the humans have already lost their fight against the souls so they can't really do anything more, so it's all in the past. Does that make sense the way it's intended?

-If a soul is in a Host when the Host dies, like of old age or something, does the soul die with it?

If the host dies, the soul does not. It continues to live on for a while inside the body, waiting to be transferred. However, if the soul does not get a new host quick enough, it, too, will perish. I remember reading somewhere in the book, that the soul can only live for a few minutes without a living host to support it.

I think I understand what you're saying... and the sense of defeat is a good image, if depressing. It just seems so strange that every single chapter follows that pattern.

Yes, that was addressed when Wanderer told the story of the Bears. (It begins on page 523) Wanderer's issue with continuing to a next life was that she wasn't near anyone who could perform the procedure. If Melanie died, she would die, also, before a soul could transfer her to a new host.

Well, if you look back at the chapter titles after reading the chapters, they are really just a main "theme" so to speak of what happens in the chapter. I don't know if there is really much significance in the fact that they are past tense verbs-its just a simple pattern that makes the chapter headings flow nicely.

So I've had this question and it's bugging me. You know the story of the one soul who comitted suicide and he was all smushed in the host's brain or something before Doc could try and take him out when they were experimenting? And how she said that the male Healer saw what was happening and his nose started bleeding? That was because he committed suicide, right? Because she kept saying how there was the two Healers in the cryotanks, but how can that be if the male healer is dead? I really hope someone can answer this 'cause it's been driving me nuts...lol. Please let me know if this makes no sense at all and I'll try to explain what I'm talking about better. :D

The Male Healer Soul killed the body he was in, not himself. He probably hoped that they wouldn't have cryotanks, but since they did, they were able to get the soul out and save him. The body/host, however, was a different story.

At least, that's whatI thinkk happened. Correct me if I'm worng. :D

nah.sorry you guys but ya both wrong!
your forgetting about the seeker!!
When she says the two souls in the cyrotanks, shes refering to the seeker's soul they took out and the 'woman' soul they kidnapped. That 'male' soul did kill himself, as well as the host body with it.

hope i helped!

At first that's what I thought, but they already put the Seeker on the ship to the Flower World or whatever. Remember? And she said the two Healeres tanks everytime. Like on page 551 it says, 'At least the souls had survived. The light on his tank glowed dull red beside hers....' Oh! Ok I get it. So the soul tried to kill himself, but instead he just killed his host body. But the other 'incident', the other soul before, tried to kill himself and it worked. He killed himself along with the body. Right? Because he was all smooshed in the brain and what not. Right? So, yeah, I think you're right Betting On Alice, thanks for that. :D
