Chapter Four: Waking Up

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?

2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?

3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?

4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?
I wasn't surprised at all, obviously, because I kind of expected Bella to go all...lifeless. It made me annoyed, to be honest, because from reading it, I just wanted to shake her and say "try and smile" or something like that. I like strong female characters, and for me, Bella was just being a tad...awful. I felt bad for Charlie, out of all the characters.

2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?
I did, in a way, as I thought it would have been better for her to get away from the things that reminded her so much of Edward and the Cullen family. I didn't really understand why if she really believed he didn't love her, why she would want to hang around and see the things that remind her of when he was there...I would have thought you would want to get as far away from that as possible...

3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?
I think Jess was definitely not the best choice, because Jess is all about herself, and if you show a distinct lack of interest in her, she's bound to see it as you being rude, etc. I think a better choice would have been Angela, who's more polite and down to earth, and certainly cares more for Bella than Jessica does. I don't think it affected their relationship at all, really, because their friendship had sort of dwindled down into a acquaintance more than anything else. It gave Jessica another reason not to like Bella.

4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?
I knew it wasn't his voice, because it doesn't make any sense. How would he magically have been able to not only get into Bella's mind, but be able to speak to her? Also, there was the whole Edward didn't want to remind Bella of himself in any way, so why would he stick around just to torment her? But that doesn't mean I didn't hope for a minute or two. I think that Bella 'living on the edge' simply to hear Edward's voice was ridiculous. Once again, if she believed he wasn't coming back and that he didn't love her, why would she want to subject herself to hearing an illusion of his voice in her head? It's like personal torture or something. If you can't tell, the whole situation just peeved me.
why are you looking grave? are you thinking of something to say? we're thinking of you.

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?
I thought it was really well done, beautifully written and poignant (especially the month pages). I was in shock, numb sort of like Bella. You just can't believe the emptiness in her life. I was surprised so much time had passed.

2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?
I understood why she didn't want to but I know why Charlie thought she should. It would have been the best thing for her from his perspective. But I didn't want her to leave because I knew she would end up with Edward again.

3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?

She chose Jessica because she is not as observant as Angela and would be easier to only half-way listen to; she's chattier. No, I was annoyed she didn't go with Angela; i'm not really a Jess-fan. It made Jessica think she was a freak but i'm pretty sure she thought that anyway.

4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?
Yes I though it was really him and was kindof dissapointed it turned out to be a halucination. I thought it was stupid and I was annoyed with her. I understand why she did it, but still. Motorcycles, honestly.

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?
No i wasn't surprised. The reason why is becasue Edward became part of her. And when he left he took that part and part of her with him. I was crying when i read this part. Because Bella reminds me of myself so in a way it was like i lost Edward too.

2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?
I understand where he was coming from. But no i did not agree with him. The reason why is because it woulnd not have solved anything and for all we know it could have gotten wors. Forks was to me was Bella's conection to Edward and if she lost that she would have lost her hope as well.

3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?
Bella chose jess cause she is not all there (sry to the jess fans)But she is someone who dosn't know who she is only what she thinks people want her to be. So yea jess was not the best choice. But i understand Bella's reason, she didn't want her situation brought up and she knew jess could care less. Well i really don't think the event helped their realationship

4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?
Well i was in tears again when this part occured. I knew it was in her head but i don't know in a way i thought Edward was there it was crazy. About Bella putting herslef in danger for the voice i think it was wrong but honestly i would have done the same thing.

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?
I was. I didn't think she would be all cheery and happy, but that she would zoom out of the world so fast and so... completely, that surprised me.
I felt hollow too. First we got the months, and then her own description of the pain and the hole she felt inside. I felt horrible, and once again it made me cry.
2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?
I didn't. In my opinion, Bella would have been even worse of in Florida. Having her heart broken the way she did, and then if she'd have to start at a new school and adjust to a new city and a new group of people again at the same time - that's not a good combination. I guess Charlie did it out of desperation, yet it was not the best choice for Bella.

3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?
She did say that choosing Jess was mainly because that meant she'd have no need to talk herself. Jessica is a "chatter", and would most likely be able to fill up the conversation, or more like the monologue, all by herself.
I think Bella should have chosen Angela instead. If Bella had told her she didn't want to talk about it, I think Angela would have left it at that, but that they could have done something else instead. But for what Bella meant she needed, Jess was definitely the right choice. Bella just wanted to get Charlie off her back, and that was the only reason she wanted to go out in the first place. With Jess, there would be no need for Bella to have to add something to the conversation herself, so she could stick the night out and then go back to her "shell".
It hugely affected their relationship, and I don't think it will ever be the same again. Not that their relationship was any good in the first place, and in my opinion Jess was just keeping Bella as a friend for the popularity, but still. I don't think Bella can ever turn to her again for anything.

4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?
I must put myself in the category of people who thought it actually was Edward's voice. I didn't know how he did it, but I was positive it was his for real and that when Bella figured she was having hallucinations, it would certainly be proved wrong later on! So I guess the joke was on me.
In Bella's situation...yeah, I think her solution was the right one. The poor girl was desperate! She had just gone through four months "outside" of this world, not paying attention to anything, because she lost Edward. When she finally heard his voice...of course she would do anything in her power to be able to hear it again! I think most people, if in her situation, would have done the same.

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?
I was not surprised that she was affected that way because of Edward, and it made sense that she tried to be normal becuase she loves Charlie so much. It made me feel very depressed and I started to wonder how Bella's life could get any better.
2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?
No because I think that would have made everything worse. Bella would constantly wonder about the Cullens returning. Also she would've never become friends with Jacob.
3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?
I think she chose Jessica because she wouldn't ask akward questions and would find a way to have fun even if Bella didn't. I think Jessica was a good choice for the reason that Bella didn't want to talk. I think by the end Jessica felt used because she realized Bella wasn't listening to her. This didn't help their realtionship.
4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?
I actually thought it was him. I got so excited, but I realized that made no sense. Then I figured it out, and still hoped he was watching out for Bella. Bella needed a way to feel connected to Edward, and if she had to put herself in danger, then I would understand. Edward's her whole life, so she would sacrifice it just to feel closer to him.

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?

To be honest, i wasnt in the least bit surprised and im so glad Stephenie portrayed the situation with the depth and intuitiveness that she did. I mean, she just lost the most perfect thing in her life. She loved him so much and he was wonderful, not to mention flawlessly gorgeous. Their soul mates and it was like losing your other half. I was actually in pain, like the kind you get in your throat when you want to cry.

2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?

Of course not. She lived on edge just to hear Edwards voice so obviously she wanted to be as close to him as possible whether or not she wanted to think about it. Her mother would just pester her and probe her to death like all mothers do when they want you to "open up" and Charlie knew not to go there.

3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?

Jessica--wasnt she one of Bella's first friends? Thats one reason why she chose her and the other is probably because she knew jessica would just talk the night away without making bella think. I remember one part when Bella was on the phone with her she was talking about how she "yea'd and mmhmm'ed in all the right places." Thats all she'd have to do with Jessica. So i think for Bella, it was a good choice considering the circumstances. I dont think it really effected their relationship only because its not a close or deep one. Jessica would have just forgotten it- just like she does with their fights.

4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?

Um...i sort of did and sort of didnt think it was edwards voice. It reminded me of the book Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte [a favorite of mine] where Jane said she "heard" Mr. Rochester calling to her even though they were miles away. And in fact, he did call out to her. I would have done the same thing just to hear Edward's voice. That little bit of consolement was enough for her and she didnt care about her self-preservation in the first place. Alice saw Bella jump and look where that got her--she ended up with Edward again :D Even though it almost killed them all..ha.

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?

I was really surprised that it skipped so much time. Mostly it amkes me feel angry at Edward for doing this to her. But then again, angry at Edward is my latest state of mind. I also felt unbearably sad for Bella.

2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?

I agreed. Sometimes a change of scenery makes a lot of difference in any kind of medical condition, depression or otherwise. And staying in Forks just kept the wound open.
3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?

Jess was Bella's first aquaintance in Forks. I guess she just went with what was easy. Frankly I think it was a bad choice-Angela would have been much better. Plus I think Jess believes Bella's a total nut job now.

4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?

I thought there must be something supernatural going on. Imagine my disappointment when it turned out to be just her head. As for putting herself into danger...at least she was doing something. Trying to feel. I'm really surprised Charlie didn't have her diagnosed with clinical depression before that. She's exhibiting a lot of the symptoms.

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?
Unfortunately I wasn't surprised. Bella tends to be just a bit of a drama queen with her emotions. And, when you love someone the way that she loves Edward; enough to have his leaving affect her PHYSICALLY, not just emotionally, I am shocked that anyone would be surprised at how she had become numb to the world around her. As to how it made me feel, I was still hanging on the the fact that the book/series couldn't go on if Edward didn't reappear. I was eternally hopeful that he would give up and pop back in to Forks.(And back into my life as well.)

2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?
Of course not! All that we have seen of Renee is that she has almost always been the child in the Bella/Renee relationship. There is no doubt that she loves Bella but, do you send something that is obviously broken back to the arms of a child?

3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?
I think she chose Jess because Jess talks and all Bella has to do is say "uh-huh, really?, wow." Every so often. With others she would be forced to take a more active role in the conversation. She was looking to try to get out but not ready to really react or relate.

4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?
I was seriously hoping that it was really him and that he had somehow learned how to put his voice into other people's heads instead of everyone else's in his. I thought he might've learned, or been taught by the Volturri even, how to better use his "talent". If putting myself into danger would make his voice pop into my head, Where's my motorcycle?
:D

1. Were you at all surprised by the description Bella gave of the dullness that surrounded her life for the past four months? How did that make you feel?

Not really. I felt sorry for her, and wished they never had to go down that road.

2. Did you agree with Charlie that Bella should go and be with her mother again? Why or why not?

At first i thought that maybe Bella should go visit her mom for awhile, but then i thought no, something might happen while she's away.

3. Bella chose to spend her first attempt at normalcy with Jessica Stanley. Why do you think she chose Jess and not one of her other friends? Do you think Jess was a good choice? How do you think this event impacted their relationship?

She probably chose Jess because she's the only one who Bella ever actually hung out with before. I'm not sure i would choose Jess, maybe Angela, because she seems a lot nicer.

4. When Bella first heard Edward's voice, did you think it was REALLY his voice or just in her head? What do you think of her solution to hear his voice more often by putting herself in danger?

I thought it really was his voice . I would've done what she did....
