Chapter sixteen: Paris

Post by Alphie »

Here are the discussion questions as provided for us by Ellabelle.

1. Should Bella confide in Jacob about Edward, her hallucinations, and her depression?

2. Would it be settling for Bella to hook up with Jacob? Should Bella try to find happiness with Jacob even if she can only give him part of her heart?

3. What about Jacob? He loves Bella despite her strictly platonic feelings towards him, but should he wait out for someone who loves him as much as he loves Bella?

4. How do we factor in the fact that Bella now owes Jacob her life both physically and emotionally?

5. Is Romeo and Juliet's relationship similar to Edward and Bella's? How is it and how does it differ?

6. Should Bella have chosen to investigate Carlisle's car? Is her relationship with the Cullens masochistic?

7. How does Bella and Jacob's relationship compare with Bella and Edward's? Which one is 'healthier' ?

1. Should Bella confide in Jacob about Edward, her hallucinations, and her depression?

It was pretty obvious to all involved that Bella was depressed, but admitting to her hallucinations might not be wise. Jacob could possibly start misconstruing her actions.

2. Would it be settling for Bella to hook up with Jacob? Should Bella try to find happiness with Jacob even if she can only give him part of her heart?

I don't think so. She would have been cheating both of them.

3. What about Jacob? He loves Bella despite her strictly platonic feelings towards him, but should he wait out for someone who loves him as much as he loves Bella?

I think so. I'm not a Bella/Jacob fan, but I do want him to be in a relationship where the feelings are mutual all the way.

4. How do we factor in the fact that Bella now owes Jacob her life both physically and emotionally?

Then it's even less wise to get into a relationship--guilt can influence you to make lots of decisions you normally wouldn't.

5. Is Romeo and Juliet's relationship similar to Edward and Bella's? How is it and how does it differ?

Well, lots of problems in it. Big misunderstanding, secrecy, etc. Happier ending, though. The Paris figure is much more likable. Their love isn't forbidden, just nontraditional.

6. Should Bella have chosen to investigate Carlisle's car? Is her relationship with the Cullens masochistic?

No. She loves the Cullens like they are her own family and was led by that love.

7. How does Bella and Jacob's relationship compare with Bella and Edward's? Which one is 'healthier' ?

They're both equally dangerous. I mean, look at Emily Young! And Sam imprinted on her. As for comparing the relationships--Bella and Jacob could have been perfect for me if Edward had never been there. Bella and Jacob love each other, but they lack passion.

1. Should Bella confide in Jacob about Edward, her hallucinations, and her depression?

no that would be very stupid. the depression i think he sees but the hallucinations she should keep to herself.

2. Would it be settling for Bella to hook up with Jacob? Should Bella try to find happiness with Jacob even if she can only give him part of her heart?

yes i think she should. Edward  left her once so i thought she should have a contingency plan just in case.

3. What about Jacob? He loves Bella despite her strictly platonic feelings towards him, but should he wait out for someone who loves him as much as he loves Bella?

I thought he should wait out for bella but i think thats a lost cause. but stealing a line from someone i cant remember theres something irrestistible about a lost cause. was it jake? i cant remember.

4. How do we factor in the fact that Bella now owes Jacob her life both physically and emotionally?

i think she is more than just friends with jake. i think that is her way of repaying him. i also think that she doesnt realize shes doing it.

5. Is Romeo and Juliet's relationship similar to Edward and Bella's? How is it and how does it differ?

i dont think it is really. i mean romeo and juliet it was love at first sight and edward took some convincing. i think that its more that she will never find a romeo but has two good paris's at her side :P

6. Should Bella have chosen to investigate Carlisle's car? Is her relationship with the Cullens masochistic?

yes and no. as much as im an advocate for jake, edward really loves her so i think that its good for her to investigate carlisles car. i think that her relationship with the cullens is a tiny mit masochistic but i think she'll get over it.

7. How does Bella and Jacob's relationship compare with Bella and Edward's? Which one is 'healthier' ?

i dont think that either is truly healthy. i think that there is too much at stake with both of them. the healthiest possible choice is a human who does not live in forks so she can get away from the vampires and werewolves. and to the point of the first question i think it is comparable on jakes side. his whole heart is reaching out for bella and bella doesnt realize that shes reaching out too because her heart is torn. i think that she and jakes relationship is beautiful because they are so alike and different at the same time! :D !
im so pumped for the movie!!! YAY ROBERT!!! I LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

1. Should Bella confide in Jacob about Edward, her hallucinations, and her depression?

I don't think it's necessary. I'm not sure what purpose it would serve, especially to Jacob. If Edward ever asked, I think Bella should tell him. But otherwise, no.

2. Would it be settling for Bella to hook up with Jacob? Should Bella try to find happiness with Jacob even if she can only give him part of her heart?

I don't think so. Because, though Bella will always love Jacob, she can't love him as fully as she loves Edward. It wouldn't be fair to Bella, and it wouldn't be fair to Jacob. He deserves someone who will love him more fully than Bella can, even if that's what he wants. He'll find his own love one day, but Bella belongs with Edward.

3. What about Jacob? He loves Bella despite her strictly platonic feelings towards him, but should he wait out for someone who loves him as much as he loves Bella?

Yes, he should. Why shouldn't he? He should know that he deserves to be loved by someone just as much as he loves them.

4. How do we factor in the fact that Bella now owes Jacob her life both physically and emotionally?

Bella owes Jacob that, but that doesn't mean that she is in his debt. They love eachother, but she shouldn't consider that when deciding who to spend her life/eternity with. It would be stupid to choose Jacob over Edward, when she obviously loves Edward more, just because Jacob helped her through that terrible time. No matter how significant his help was to her.

5. Is Romeo and Juliet's relationship similar to Edward and Bella's? How is it and how does it differ?

I'm not sure. Romeo and Juliet never got to truly be together, and they died together. Bella and Edward are together, and yet he will technically "kill" her one day. That will kill Edward. To me, that is a huge parallel.

6. Should Bella have chosen to investigate Carlisle's car? Is her relationship with the Cullens masochistic?

I don't think so. Bella finally feels a sense of peace and belonging when she is with the Cullens. It is reasonable for her to want to investigate such a huge part of her life.

7. How does Bella and Jacob's relationship compare with Bella and Edward's? Which one is 'healthier' ?

Jacob's and Bella's is much healthier. Mostly because Bella doesn't feel as dependent on Jacob as she does on Edward. But for that reason alone, it would be unhealthier for Bella to be with Jacob while Edward existed.

1) No, I don't think Bella should confide in Jacob... not sure why I feel this way... maybe because I only want her to confide in Edward...

2)Oh, Bella would ONLY be settling if she were to hook up with Jacob... No, trying to find happiness with Jacob would not be fair for either one of them in the long run... she would ONLY be pining for Edward only to hurt Jacob and herself later on...

3) Yes Jacob should only want someone who feels the same for him... How can you want to be with someone when you know they want someone else?

4) Bella does not owe Jacob ANYTHING... In my opinion...

5) I don't know...

6) Bella knows how it is to live when the cullens are around and dies when they are not around... Of course she would investigate Carlisles car... she wants her life back!

7) Bella and Jacob cant compare to Bella and Edward! Which is more healthier? probably the human one... but it is not what makes Bella happy...
"Bella... are you sure? Did you make the right choice? I've never seen you in so much pain-"
I touched his lips. "Yes."
"I don't know... If it hurts you so much, how can it possibly be the right thing for you?"
"Edward, I know who I can't live without."
"But..."
"You don't understand... I have to be with you. It's the only way I can live."
He pulled me closer, "'I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!'"

Thanks Ellabelle. :)

1. Should Bella confide in Jacob about Edward, her hallucinations, and her depression?
I think she was taking things slowly, and that was okay. If Edward would have never came back, and she would have decided to be with Jacob, then I think it would have benefited her to get everything all out on the table. But I think he could probably tell she was depressed.

2. Would it be settling for Bella to hook up with Jacob? Should Bella try to find happiness with Jacob even if she can only give him part of her heart?
If Edward was never coming back, I would say no, it wouldn't be settling, and that she should try to find happiness with him. But since he did I think she should be with whoever she feels the happiest with and that she needs the most.

3. What about Jacob? He loves Bella despite her strictly platonic feelings towards him, but should he wait out for someone who loves him as much as he loves Bella?
Yes. He's very young still and his own soulmate is out there somewhere.

4. How do we factor in the fact that Bella now owes Jacob her life both physically and emotionally?
She does owe him her life, and it is right for her to offer him friendship and kindness, but that shouldn't be any reason for her to go against what her gut feeling was. You don't ever "owe" anybody a romantic relationship no matter what they do for you.

5. Is Romeo and Juliet's relationship similar to Edward and Bella's? How is it and how does it differ?
In some ways. They're like Romeo and Juliet in that they feel like a very fated couple, and their names sort of go hand in hand (to me, anyway). Also, their love comes about in a very fast way, and they do stupid things without thinking them through because they're so in love. It's different because Bella and Edward, though just as capable of making mistakes, are a little older (especially Edward :D ) and their relationship is more mature. Also there is of course the whole vampire thing.

6. Should Bella have chosen to investigate Carlisle's car? Is her relationship with the Cullens masochistic?
No. It's understandable why she loves the Cullens and it is hard to stop thinking about them when they became such a huge part of their life.

7. How does Bella and Jacob's relationship compare with Bella and Edward's? Which one is 'healthier' ?[/quote]
It's a different kind of love. Bella/Jacob is a very reliable, easy kind of love. Edward/Bella is a very passionate, fated, romantic kind of love (I'm saying that as an opinion I find their relationship more romantic and feel likea fated pairing, not that B/J aren't capable of romance or being together). And I actually don't think either is "healthier" except for the fact that Bella/Jacob would not result in her losing humanity. They both have their issues and strong points.

1. Should Bella confide in Jacob about Edward, her hallucinations, and her depression?

Probably not. Jacob is a good friend but he is still young and at this time had probably not had any experiences close to the pain Bella was going through and would not of been able to understand.

2. Would it be settling for Bella to hook up with Jacob? Should Bella try to find happiness with Jacob even if she can only give him part of her heart?

I would of been very unhappy as a reader if Bella ended up with Jacob. It might have been a healthier option for Bella but is it really far for Jacob to have someone give him part of their heart when they may be someone out there who can give him all of it?

3. What about Jacob? He loves Bella despite her strictly platonic feelings towards him, but should he wait out for someone who loves him as much as he loves Bella?

He does truely love Bella. But like Bella's feelings toward Edward, this is probably his very first love. But unlike the Bella/Edward relationship those feelings are returned the same way. Thus yes, he should try to move on to find someone he can love just as much who can return the same amount of love.

4. How do we factor in the fact that Bella now owes Jacob her life both physically and emotionally?

Hmm this is a hard question. I don't really believe Bella "owes" Jacob anything. I'm sure he still would of saved her. She told him from the beginning that all she could offer was friendship, even if she was considering otherwise after awhile he didn't know that. All he had was hope and time.

5. Is Romeo and Juliet's relationship similar to Edward and Bella's? How is it and how does it differ?

I think Bella and Edward's love is a little stronger than Romeo and Juliet's. In Twilight Edward spent a lot of time getting to know every aspect of Bella's life and (olease don't kill me) but like Edward's opinion, the whole Romeo character always seemed kind of fickle to me.

6. Should Bella have chosen to investigate Carlisle's car? Is her relationship with the Cullens masochistic?

Yes she probably should have rather than walking in a dark house by herself. And yes it probably does border on masochistic but that can be human nature especially when dealing with love.

7. How does Bella and Jacob's relationship compare with Bella and Edward's? Which one is 'healthier' ?

Bella and Jacob's relationship is probably how a lot more normal relationship start out. Friendship growing into something more. Bella and Edward's is more chemical. Honestly neither of these relationships are completely healthy. Edward is a vampire which seems to constantly put her in danger and with Jacob she's planning to basically "jimmy rig" the whole in her chest.

1. Should Bella confide in Jacob about Edward, her hallucinations, and her depression?
Her depression is obvious to everyone around her. She should not confess about her hallucinations, Jacob may misunderstand her and feel she used him. Which was her intent, but that changed once she realized how happy she was when she was with him

2. Would it be settling for Bella to hook up with Jacob? Should Bella try to find happiness with Jacob even if she can only give him part of her heart?
Yes, but she would have been happy and eventually the pain would have lessened- it was already starting to when he held her.

3. What about Jacob? He loves Bella despite her strictly platonic feelings towards him, but should he wait out for someone who loves him as much as he loves Bella?
By this chapter she had more than platonic feelings for Jacob, and he knew it. Why should he deny his feelings when she is finally starting to let go.

4. How do we factor in the fact that Bella now owes Jacob her life both physically and emotionally?
Not sure if you are wanting our opinion on this or our opinion on how Bella should feel. I am going w/the first option - This is why I don't understand the Jacob haters, he saved her more than once. If it wasn't for Jacob, there would be no Bella for Edward to come back to. Edward would have committed suicide. People should be thanking Jacob for saving her.

5. Is Romeo and Juliet's relationship similar to Edward and Bella's? How is it and how does it differ?
Somewhat-Forbidden love, separation, depression and misunderstandings that lead to suicided. - Their families aren't against their love- Unlike Romeo, Edward made the choice to leave instead of being forced. Bella and Edward have a happy ending.

6. Should Bella have chosen to investigate Carlisle's car? Is her relationship with the Cullens masochistic?
Nope, she knew the car. Jacob didn't deny it being someone else. He just said it was a vampire-instead of, Victoria's here. I don't see it as being masochistic, she knows the Cullen's are different and wont hurt her.

7. How does Bella and Jacob's relationship compare with Bella and Edward's? Which one is 'healthier' ?
I see Bella and Jacob's love as more a high school girl and boyfriend relationship- they dated and their friendship grew into something more. Bella and Edwards is something completely different(unexplainable at this time) Bella and Jake's is definitely healthier, but both relationships are dangerous

1. Should Bella confide in Jacob about Edward, her hallucinations, and her depression?
Jacob already knows that Bella is depressed and he also knows the reason for her depression, telling him about the hallucinations would not accomplish anything for either character except more hurt. Jacob might react in the wrong way, I know that if I was put into a similar situation I would be hurt and probably kind of angry with the person.

2. Would it be settling for Bella to hook up with Jacob? Should Bella try to find happiness with Jacob even if she can only give him part of her heart?

I don't think that Bella should try and find happiness with Jacob, I feel this way because it is completly unfair to both Jacob and Bella. He wants to give her all of his heart, but she is not able to do so in return, and I feel that in Love you shouldn't have to settle. I also think that Bella would not find true happiness knowing that Edward is out there somewhere.

3. What about Jacob? He loves Bella despite her strictly platonic feelings towards him, but should he wait out for someone who loves him as much as he loves Bella?

I know exactly how Jacob is feeling, and it is not an easy thing to endure. I think that ultimatly he should try and move on and hold out for someone who can return his intense feelings. At the same time I can see it from his point of view when you are in love with someone, it is impossible to imagine yourself ever feeling differently, or loving another person in quite the same way, so I knew that he would continue to try his hardest, blinded by love.

4. How do we factor in the fact that Bella now owes Jacob her life both physically and emotionally?
This is a really difficult question to answer. I think I have to think about it a little more before I answer.

5. 5. Is Romeo and Juliet's relationship similar to Edward and Bella's? How is it and how does it differ?

I'm afraid that I have to agree with Edward here on his point about Romeo being a bit fickle. I know that Romeo and Juliet love each other and I can see how the love is similar to that of Bella and Edward. However one major difference is that I never really understood why Romeo loved Juliet so much, I mean when you think about it all he really did was glance upon her and that was it he was hooked(Please don't hate me for that comment, I do believe in Love at first site to a certain extent, I just feel that love at first site is not really true love: It is more than lust but it is not a strong bond between two people, a shared emotion...just my own opinion though.) With Bella and Edward we can attempt to understand the love they have for each other and we were able to watch it grow.

6. Should Bella have chosen to investigate Carlisle's car? Is her relationship with the Cullens masochistic?
I don't think so on both questions. I think she viewed the Cullens as her family. She had been through so much pain and suffering in the past months that the return of the car sent emotions through her that were far past the voice of reason. It felt to her as though her family had returned, like she was waking from a bad dream (well maybe it wasn't that bad, she did have Jacob to ease the pain :) ).

7. How does Bella and Jacob's relationship compare with Bella and Edward's? Which one is 'healthier' ?
I really don't think that either relationship is healthier than the other. Both pose threats phisycal and emotional, and both have wonderful aspects to them. I think that the biggest difference between Bella and Jacob's relationship with Bella and Edwards is that Edward is Bella's true love. When a person finds there true love I don't think that they are incapable of loving someone else but I do think that they are not able to love someone else in the same passionte way.

1. Should Bella confide in Jacob about Edward, her hallucinations, and her depression?

I didn't think she should. But I would have, because Jacob knows everything already, and he is basically the only option she had.

2. Would it be settling for Bella to hook up with Jacob? Should Bella try to find happiness with Jacob even if she can only give him part of her heart?

I think that if she had been with Jacob, it would have been a very bad situation. Because even though she does love him, she loves Edward more. And I think Jacob would be paranoid that everytime he kissed her, or touched her, he would be wondering if she was thinking of Edward. It would have ripped him apart.

3. What about Jacob? He loves Bella despite her strictly platonic feelings towards him, but should he wait out for someone who loves him as much as he loves Bella?

I think he should. It would hurt him too, but eventually he could be so much happier.

4. How do we factor in the fact that Bella now owes Jacob her life both physically and emotionally?

I think that she does love him, but that she also feels like she owes him, and the only way she can think to repay him is to be with him even though her heart isn't all the way in it.

5. Is Romeo and Juliet's relationship similar to Edward and Bella's? How is it and how does it differ?

I think it's similar. They're not supposed to be together, and yet they are.

6. Should Bella have chosen to investigate Carlisle's car? Is her relationship with the Cullens masochistic?

Well, if she was using her head, she would have looked at it. But she's been desperate for any peice of her old life for so long, she just sent with her gut. What else would you expect?

7. How does Bella and Jacob's relationship compare with Bella and Edward's? Which one is 'healthier' ?

Well, seeing as Edward's a vampire, and Jacob's a werewolf, I feel pretty confident that neither of them are "healthy" but, I think Bella and Edward are healthier than Bella and Jacob because Bella loves Edward more.
