Chapter Nine: Third Wheel

Post by Alphie »

These questions come from the lovely Twix!

1. Jessica switches allegiance by siding with Lauren and convincing others to not go on the group outing. Do you feel that, based on Bella's actions the night of the bar incident, her reaction is justified?

2. When the motorcycle loses power to summon Edward's voice, Bella begins to search for the meadow. Why do you think she chooses this as her next attempt to conjure his voice?

3. Bella is amazed that Jacob never gives up on pursuing her, despite rejection after rejection. She wonders where he gets the confidence. Based on what we know of Jacob, what do you think he reasons are for being so confident and not giving up?

4. Bella knows that part of her will always love Edward, yet she begins to entertain the idea of Jacob being more than just a friend. Do you see this as a betrayal of her heart, or is she smart to press forward and think about moving on?

A little. I wouldn't want to be friends with someone who displays psychotic tendencies (and I had a close family friend who did. It was not a good idea to get involved).

2. When the motorcycle loses power to summon Edward's voice, Bella begins to search for the meadow. Why do you think she chooses this as her next attempt to conjure his voice?

I think that the meadow has always been directly connected to Edward in Bella's mind. Maybe now that she's discovered the rush of hearing his voice, she's willing to risk the pain of seeing it again in exchange for that rush.

3. Bella is amazed that Jacob never gives up on pursuing her, despite rejection after rejection. She wonders where he gets the confidence. Based on what we know of Jacob, what do you think he reasons are for being so confident and not giving up?

I think he's just optimistic and stubborn (in a goood way). He's had a loving upbringing, and seems undamaged on the whole as a person.

4. Bella knows that part of her will always love Edward, yet she begins to entertain the idea of Jacob being more than just a friend. Do you see this as a betrayal of her heart, or is she smart to press forward and think about moving on?

I think it's good that she's finally moving on. I was a bit dismayed that she had to think "romance" in her relationship with Jake (in my opinion I think she'd need a few more years between her and Edward), but I was glad that she was finally moving out of her depression.

3. It is very dogged of him, is it not?

Sorry, sorry. I couldn't resist.

1. Jessica switches allegiance by siding with Lauren and convincing others to not go on the group outing. Do you feel that, based on Bella's actions the night of the bar incident, her reaction is justified? I think that she could have been a little more sympathetic towards Bella. She had a right to be angry, but not to completely turn everybody against Bella.
2. When the motorcycle loses power to summon Edward's voice, Bella begins to search for the meadow. Why do you think she chooses this as her next attempt to conjure his voice? I think she was really desperate to find something to summon his voice. And of course it held some of her most intimate moments with Edward. She probably figured that his presence must be imprinted there.
3. Bella is amazed that Jacob never gives up on pursuing her, despite rejection after rejection. She wonders where he gets the confidence. Based on what we know of Jacob, what do you think he reasons are for being so confident and not giving up? He seems to be very optimistic, and he knows how hurt Bella is. He knows that Bella enjoys his company enough to continue his pursuit. Also because Jacob knows that Edward and the Cullens are gone.
4. Bella knows that part of her will always love Edward, yet she begins to entertain the idea of Jacob being more than just a friend. Do you see this as a betrayal of her heart, or is she smart to press forward and think about moving on? I think that as long as she acknowledges that Edward is her true love, it's okay. At this point, the Cullens aren't ever coming back, and she does have to move on eventually, and why not with her best friend who knows all her secrets? I think she was just trying to move on, and be as happy as possible.

He doesn't give up because she "likes him best". Edward is not around any more and that was his only real competition for Bella

1. Jessica switches allegiance by siding with Lauren and convincing others to not go on the group outing. Do you feel that, based on Bella's actions the night of the bar incident, her reaction is justified?
Somewhat. I can understand Jessica's anger because Bella put them in that dangerous situation. I would be upset, too, but if Bella apologized I would learn to forgive eventually. I just think Jessica finally found something to stay angry at Bella since she never really sincerely liked her to begin with.

2. When the motorcycle loses power to summon Edward's voice, Bella begins to search for the meadow. Why do you think she chooses this as her next attempt to conjure his voice?
Because it is the most important location for her and Edward. It was where they first exchanged their feelings for one another and where she first saw him in the sun. This place holds all those precious memories.

3. Bella is amazed that Jacob never gives up on pursuing her, despite rejection after rejection. She wonders where he gets the confidence. Based on what we know of Jacob, what do you think he reasons are for being so confident and not giving up?
Jacob is just a happy person. He likes Bella and he sees no reason why he would just simply give up.

4. Bella knows that part of her will always love Edward, yet she begins to entertain the idea of Jacob being more than just a friend. Do you see this as a betrayal of her heart, or is she smart to press forward and think about moving on?
Hmmm...both perhaps. It's a good thing that she is able to think a little about moving on. It is healthy, but at the same time it is unhealthy because of the situation she is bringing upon herself. It's not good to lead Jacob on and in the end if she honestly does not have sincere romantic feelings for him then she shouldn't do it.
It was a crippling thing, this sensation that a huge hole had been punched through my chest, excising my most vital organs and leaving ragged, unhealed gashes around the edges that continued to throb and bleed despite the passage of time.

1. I think Jessica could be nicer about it. Jessica had a right to be mad about it, but she shouldn't have turned everyone against Bella, she should have talked with Bella about it if she was that mad.

2. To her, the meadow would never lose it's essence of Edward. She wanted to be the one place where she felt closest to Edward.

3. Jacob is happy and persistent. He doesn't seem to understand why Bella wouldn't move on, but he's willing to wait for her. He doesn't want to give up.

4. She's not really betraying anything, Edward left her-and she doesn't know that he still loves her. Edward told her to move on, so she kind of is. She's making the best of her situation.

I see why she did it yet it still doesn't justify it. Yes, Bella was acting crazy and "ruined" her night. But if Jessica was a true she would see Bella had just had her heart ripped out and needed sympathy and support.

2. When the motorcycle loses power to summon Edward's voice, Bella begins to search for the meadow. Why do you think she chooses this as her next attempt to conjure his voice?
Because the meadow was always their spot. He always took her there and its where they kind of first fell in love you could say. So it still had the strongest ties to Edward and was all she had left to remember him by.

3. Bella is amazed that Jacob never gives up on pursuing her, despite rejection after rejection. She wonders where he gets the confidence. Based on what we know of Jacob, what do you think he reasons are for being so confident and not giving up?
Like somebody said before. Edward was Jacobs only road block to Bella. With him out of the way all he had to do was slowly wear her down.

4. Bella knows that part of her will always love Edward, yet she begins to entertain the idea of Jacob being more than just a friend. Do you see this as a betrayal of her heart, or is she smart to press forward and think about moving on?
I don't think she was truely moving on. I think she was telling herself to move on yet her heart never would. Bella wanted to forget Edward and love Jacob but I don't think she would ever be able to. Her heart belonged to Edward and it always will. So she was telling herelf Jacob could be more of a friend as a distraction even though she knew he never would be. Does that make sence?

1. Jessica switches allegiance by siding with Lauren and convincing others to not go on the group outing. Do you feel that, based on Bella's actions the night of the bar incident, her reaction is justified?

Jessica is justified to a point. I think that she over-reacted quite a bit, because of the way that she basically tried to distroy the attempts that Bella made to fit back into the highschool society.

2. When the motorcycle loses power to summon Edward's voice, Bella begins to search for the meadow. Why do you think she chooses this as her next attempt to conjure his voice?

In my opinion, she searches for the meadow because that was a place where the Cullens and Hales could be who they really are, and because the meadow was where Bella and Edward could be together alone without anyone there to disturb them.

3. Bella is amazed that Jacob never gives up on pursuing her, despite rejection after rejection. She wonders where he gets the confidence. Based on what we know of Jacob, what do you think he reasons are for being so confident and not giving up?

He could be confident because he never really made a move on Bella until after Edward was gone. His new found confidence could have been steming from the fact that, once Edward was gone, Bella was left alone to go where Edward could not.

4. Bella knows that part of her will always love Edward, yet she begins to entertain the idea of Jacob being more than just a friend. Do you see this as a betrayal of her heart, or is she smart to press forward and think about moving on?

This could be seen as a double-edged sword, seeing as in a sense, she is betraying her love for a vampire for the love of a werewolf. This could also be seen that she is pressing forward because she was trying to forget his memory, no matter how hard it was to try, not to mention the fact that she could be accepted by another "monster" and still feel protected.

1. Jessica switches allegiance by siding with Lauren and convincing others to not go on the group outing. Do you feel that, based on Bella's actions the night of the bar incident, her reaction is justified?
My first reaction was that Jessica was overreacting. I didn't think that it was that big of a deal. But later on I started thinking about it, and since I know the reasons behind Bella's actions, they probably seem to make more sense to me then they would to Jessica. I think it was kind of shallow for Jessica to completely turn her back on Bella, and even stoop to lauren's level.
2. When the motorcycle loses power to summon Edward's voice, Bella begins to search for the meadow. Why do you think she chooses this as her next attempt to conjure his voice?
It seems to be a rational place to choose, it was obviously a special place to Bella. I think it was also the fact that the meadow was so perfect (like the cullens? :D ) that Bella really needed the assurance in seeing it. Bella was probably trying to hang on to anything that would help her remember, to bring back Edwards voice.(In my opinion Edwards voice was not only Bella's sub concious's attempt to convince Bella, but also the attempt to hold on to Edward....she was afraid to forget)
3. Bella is amazed that Jacob never gives up on pursuing her, despite rejection after rejection. She wonders where he gets the confidence. Based on what we know of Jacob, what do you think he reasons are for being so confident and not giving up?
Jacob just seems to be a loving fun sort of guy. I don't think Bella's rejections hurt him quite as much for a couple of reasons: The first reason being that Jacob is understanding about Bella's situation with the Cullens.(more so before he finds out their secret)The second is that Jacob seems to be optimistic. Im sure(at this point) he thinks that anytime soon, Bella will realize that they are meant for each other and they will be together.
4. Bella knows that part of her will always love Edward, yet she begins to entertain the idea of Jacob being more than just a friend. Do you see this as a betrayal of her heart, or is she smart to press forward and think about moving on?
I don't think it is a betrayal of the heart. Bella admitts to herself that she would only ever love Jacob as a dear friend. I simply think that Bella was trying to make Jacob happy; and to survive. At this point Bella truly believes that Edward will not come back, and she has to live her life like that. I think she is trying to make do with what she has.
