Chapter 20 - Impatience

Post by Alphie »

We can all breathe a sigh of relief that now we can answer these questions with new Moon information in our minds! YEAH! Becasue my first question has to do with just that!

1. Alice tells Bella that the family will do what it takes to protect her because no one wants to look at Edward for the next century should Bella die. How do you feel about this line now that yu have read New Moon and know exactly how Edward would react were Bella ever to die?

2. Jasper talks more in this chapter than any other chapter. What things do we learn about his character from the way he reacts to Bella? Were you ever afraid of him during this chapter?

3. This is the frist time we learn that the vampires are venomous. What was your reaction to this news and did it make you think twice about the fact that Edward had kissed Bella?

4. Why do you suppose Edward has been so adamant about not telling Bella how someone becomes a vampire?

5. Alice has a vision of the dance studio and the proceeds to question Bella about any reasons why she might go there. It seems to me that Alice saw Bella at the studio. Why didnt Alice cler this up for Bella by explaining to her that she shouldn't go to the studio?

1. Well... they can't really look at Edward anymore, because he'll be dead. =P I bet that Alice and Jasper, as well as the whole family knew what Edward would do if Bella were to die, and obviously, they didn't want that.

2. No, I was never afraid of Jasper doing anything to Bella. =] He was quite cautious around Bella, and we all knew why. I do like the fact that he was quite reassuring, and that he could pull himself together to be so close in her proximity without going crazy.

3. In my whole life of reading vampire novels, I have never heard of venom being in a vampire's bite. It wasn't shocking to me, because anything can happen in a vampire novel. ;] I didn't fret about Edward's kissing to Bella at all, because I knew that vampires have to bite to inject venom into it's prey. Shoot, I would have loved it if kisses brought venom. =P Bella would be a vampire by now if that were the case.

4. Edward obviously doesn't want Bella to become one. Giving her the knowledge of how it's done, or what happens during the changing process might even egg her on. Although Alice does mention that there is invigorating pain during the transformation, she doesn't give the full details. If Alice had never told Bella how the change from human to vampire happened, Bella would have tons of possibilites in her head that could even frighten her, such as: there's pain everyday. The pain lasts for a year after you're bitten.

5. Alice probably knew that Edward was going to save Bella. Or, she knew that James was going to be there. Since she knew that, and she knew that Bella was going, she could lead the rest of the family when they arrived in Phoenix into an all out attack on James. If Bella had never gone, who knows how long James would have been tagging Bella? I personally think that Alice's choice to let Bella go was a good idea. Now James is gone, which is a huge plus to Bella's life. (Although Vic. is still out there...)

YAY! My first chapter discussion. =] And I was the very first one to post. =D

1. Alice tells Bella that the family will do what it takes to protect her because no one wants to look at Edward for the next century should Bella die. How do you feel about this line now that yu have read New Moon and know exactly how Edward would react were Bella ever to die?

I believed that line in Twilight when I read it the first time. I think that when you are sad for almost a century, and you find something that makes you happy, only to have it taken away from you would be one of the greatest pains that you'd have to live through. I know that the rest of the Cullens cared for Edward a great deal, I mean he was family after all. But the Volterra incident really put it into perspective for Bella I believe. Alice articulated that had the rest of the family been there, and there was a controversy, they would step in. The Volturri do not care about them, if neccessary, they would just kill the Cullens, and they don't want to do that when they could be used later on. It's just that had something actually happened to Bella, the rest of the Cullens know exactly what he'd try to do, and this time there would be no stopping him. I like knowing that they are a close family, but there are times when I worry that their family ties will be their own downfall.

2. Jasper talks more in this chapter than any other chapter. What things do we learn about his character from the way he reacts to Bella? Were you ever afraid of him during this chapter?

I think we learned a lot about Jasper. Before in the book, he always seemed like he was in such a hurry. He wasn't as reserved as he was in this chapter, and when he talked, he did it merely for Bella's sake, I believe. I don't have my copy with me, or I would have a better answer for this. But I know that we learned how much Jasper cared about the situation, and we learned how patient he could be.

3. This is the frist time we learn that the vampires are venomous. What was your reaction to this news and did it make you think twice about the fact that Edward had kissed Bella?

I think that I had always known that the vampires were "venomous" to a point, because in all the other vampire mythology, if a vampire bites a human, they go through a series of changes that occur and they become a vampire. There had to be something that would innitiate the change when the bite had occurred, otherwise, it would just be a bite, and you'd think nothing of it.

4. Why do you suppose Edward has been so adamant about not telling Bella how someone becomes a vampire?

I think it was more for her protection (like everything else). It would have sparked a curiosity, and she would have wanted to know what the experience felt like. What the big deal was about becoming a vampire you know?

5. Alice has a vision of the dance studio and the proceeds to question Bella about any reasons why she might go there. It seems to me that Alice saw Bella at the studio. Why didnt Alice cler this up for Bella by explaining to her that she shouldn't go to the studio?

Well I don't think that Alice saw Bella at the studio, because Bella hadn't known anything about it, or why it was relevant yet to even decide if she would be going there or not. I just think that Alice was curious as to if Bella knew anything about the studio. Plus, Alice didn't really know what the studio signified. It could have meant anything.

1. Alice tells Bella that the family will do what it takes to protect her because no one wants to look at Edward for the next century should Bella die. How do you feel about this line now that yu have read New Moon and know exactly how Edward would react were Bella ever to die?

Now that I can compare the two, I think that line has foreshadowing written all over it, though it is a definite understatement when compared with the events of New Moon.

2. Jasper talks more in this chapter than any other chapter. What things do we learn about his character from the way he reacts to Bella? Were you ever afraid of him during this chapter?

hehe this part made me really like him. It showed just how caring he is, and that his avoidance of Bella at first was not at all personal. He also really intruiged me, the way he says little, but lets his actions speak for him. <3 Jasper.

3. This is the frist time we learn that the vampires are venomous. What was your reaction to this news and did it make you think twice about the fact that Edward had kissed Bella?

I knew they would have to be venomous to an extent if transformations were to be possible. This didn't make me think twice about the fact that they had kissed per se, but I still thought that Edward made the right move by making sure he was still in control of his need before doing so.

4. Why do you suppose Edward has been so adamant about not telling Bella how someone becomes a vampire?

Edward is so deadset against taking away her mortality, and giving her information on how one becomes a vampire would just give her ideas. He also knows that she won't take no for an answer, regardless of what he tells her.

5. Alice has a vision of the dance studio and the proceeds to question Bella about any reasons why she might go there. It seems to me that Alice saw Bella at the studio. Why didnt Alice cler this up for Bella by explaining to her that she shouldn't go to the studio?

She wanted to make sure that Bella wasn't going to end up at the ballet studio by chance, but she didn't want to scare her either, so she had to make her point in a roundabout way.

1. I don't think any of them wanted to see Bella get hurt. But we all know what would happen if she did. There would be no eyes of Edward to even look at for the next century. There wouldn't even be an Edward at all. I think Alice knew perfectly well what Edward would do if Bella were to die, but she didn't want to say it because it might worry Bella.

2. I was never afraid of Jasper. I never am afraid of him, maybe that's a bad thing. Well, anyway, I definately found out that he cares for Bella just as much as the next Cullen, he just has to show it in different ways because he doesn't want to hurt her.

3. I didn't really think twice at that. I always just assumed vampires were venomous anyway. Besides, everything about vampires is so different in Twilight that nothing about them can surprise me. As for the kissing part, I was like "Darn, it didn't change Bella into a vampire!"

4. I don't think Edward wanted to tell Bella about changing into a vampire for one reason. He didn't want to see her reaction. One way she could react is that she would want to become a vampire, and he really doesn't want that. Another way she could react is that she could go running away screaming like he's still waiting for her to do.

5. I don't think Alice would have seen Bella at the studio because Bella hadn't made her decision about going there yet because she didn't know about it yet. Alice may not have known that the studio had anything to do with the current situation.

1. I think that part of Alice's statement comes from the knowledge of what Edward went through. ALice knows the struggles Edward was faced with when he first met Bella as well as all the challenges he endured to be with her. ALice knows that Edward carries a certain amount of guilt with him over all things that involve Bella. The loss of Bella would be something that I think the whole family would suffer through but for differnet reasons. Obviously the Cullen's knew that Edward would not react well to say the least.

2. I wasn't afraid of Jasper. I think he is still having trouble being around humans and having Bella so close to the family is difficult. He does seem to care for Bella but he may have differnet motives. Alice and Edward really like Bella and that makes them happy therefore Jasper is happy.

3. The venom was a little suprising. I like that the vampires in the book are different from most vampires. I am not suprised about the kissing thing because Edward was always so careful to not hurt Bella. I don't think he would put her in danger.

4. I don't think Edward wanted to expose Bella to that information. He may suspect that she will want to be changed and by hiding the information from her he won't have to make that decision.

1. Alice tells Bella that the family will do what it takes to protect her because no one wants to look at Edward for the next century should Bella die. How do you feel about this line now that you have read New Moon and know exactly how Edward would react were Bella ever to die?

I suppose the statement has a stronger meaning now, knowing that Edward had planned on not existing at all if Bella was not alive. And it had a powerful significance initially. After reading New Moon, I think that I have a better feeling of how much truth was in her words.

2. Jasper talks more in this chapter than any other chapter. What things do we learn about his character from the way he reacts to Bella? Were you ever afraid of him during this chapter?

He's probably never spent much time with a human who actually knew what he was. He seemed very cautious, but also very caring. I don't remember being afraid of him during this chapter.

3. This is the frist time we learn that the vampires are venomous. What was your reaction to this news and did it make you think twice about the fact that Edward had kissed Bella?

I thought that the venom explanation made sense, but I didn't think about the kissing until after I'd finished the book.

4. Why do you suppose Edward has been so adamant about not telling Bella how someone becomes a vampire?

Probably so she doesn't go out of her way to become one.

5. Alice has a vision of the dance studio and the proceeds to question Bella about any reasons why she might go there. It seems to me that Alice saw Bella at the studio. Why didnt Alice clear this up for Bella by explaining to her that she shouldn't go to the studio?

My guess is that she didn't want to scare Bella. Or worse, put ideas into her head.

Alice knew what Edward would do, but Bella was already so worried (for no reason, really, as the Cullens kept telling her) for Edward's safety and Alice was so worried about Bella's that she was grossly understating it to try to stop any panic but to still let Bella know how important she is.

2. Jasper talks more in this chapter than any other chapter. What things do we learn about his character from the way he reacts to Bella? Were you ever afraid of him during this chapter?

I was never really afraid of Jasper because I always got him. I just now realized that he is a bit like Marianas, from something I'm writing, so I feel like I know how he thinks. Jasper, in this chapter, was staying calm, asking Alice and Bella very methodically what they saw/remembered. Bella mostly thinks about Alice in this chapter because it's Alice she knows better, but Jasper is really the one in control of the situation. Since he has to work so hard at control, in terms of feeding, in other places where he needs control he seems perfectly calm if a little detached.

3. This is the frist time we learn that the vampires are venomous. What was your reaction to this news and did it make you think twice about the fact that Edward had kissed Bella?

I'm a big fan of vampires and vampire stories and I always thought it was interesting how all the mythologies are actually quite different, so to me this was just another take on that. So my reaction was basically: *sock head* "neat"

4. Why do you suppose Edward has been so adamant about not telling Bella how someone becomes a vampire?

Because he didn't even want to have to contemplate Bella and the pain of becoming a vampire in the same sentence. He's trying to protect her from so much of the uglyness of things because he doesn't want her to have anything to do with pain and loss. To even think about that would be practically unbearable for him.

5. Alice has a vision of the dance studio and the proceeds to question Bella about any reasons why she might go there. It seems to me that Alice saw Bella at the studio. Why didnt Alice cler this up for Bella by explaining to her that she shouldn't go to the studio?

I don't think Alice saw Bella at the studio. She knew James would be there and Bella recognised the place, which would be enough to inspire some questions, but Bella has no reason at all to go to a ballet studio and she know this, so she doesn't see the necessity of particularly warning Bella away from there ...yet.

1. Alice tells Bella that the family will do what it takes to protect her because no one wants to look at Edward for the next century should Bella die. How do you feel about this line now that yu have read New Moon and know exactly how Edward would react were Bella ever to die?

sarcastically to say: the'd no long time to look at him -sorry
no, seriously: we didn't see how he changed, knowing Bella better an better, falling in love with her, 'midnight sun' will give us more information to that point. I think, it's hard to imagine Edward as an brother lol, but I would do anything to keep Bella save, I mean, we (fans)all see him as a romantic hero, but not as an relative... but this gives us an impression to this, right? I think he turned because of Bella into an alive personality. e.g. Esme is so happy, seeing him touching Bella as a boy in love...they don't want to loose this positive, not bored Edward, of course!!!

2. Jasper talks more in this chapter than any other chapter. What things do we learn about his character from the way he reacts to Bella? Were you ever afraid of him during this chapter?

I was never afraid of him. Now, knowing new moon, I do, a little bit. And ever more, reading, that he is so close to Alice, and not so deep with the other Cullens. Now he is a little bit strange to me.
At the time I was reading this chapter, I thought, what a wonderful man, so sensitive and cool. But this is not longer my impression, as I said. I am more warily.

3. This is the frist time we learn that the vampires are venomous. What was your reaction to this news and did it make you think twice about the fact that Edward had kissed Bella?

Oh, I was much to disappointed over the 'safe' kind of his kissing. Now, I see the reason...and don't forget, the poison has to comae into the blood to be really dangerous. And so the kiss is just a little more thrilling...

4. Why do you suppose Edward has been so adamant about not telling Bella how someone becomes a vampire?

then I thought it's a kind of his charakter: his irresistible, attractive kind of arrogance. that he cares for bellas soul? no, I was very, very unjust to Edward those days...

5. Alice has a vision of the dance studio and the proceeds to question Bella about any reasons why she might go there. It seems to me that Alice saw Bella at the studio. Why didnt Alice cler this up for Bella by explaining to her that she shouldn't go to the studio?

If Alice saw the nightmare happening and was not telling her about, it was all to save her from fear. I am sure. Alice, is protecting her because, she will keep Edward happy and in this new way, but I also think, she likes Bella very much for herself. And for this she wants to keep her calm and hopefully, and tried to solve the problem by looking for new visions without irritating Bella.
