1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished?

I had no clue where he might have gone. I figured hiding out at home but that would be boring. Driving all night to reach Alaska in a desperate attempt to escape was so much better. :D

2. We learn a few things about Bella's parents in this chapter. Charlie can't cook - Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual?

She's had to be very self-sufficient and independent. She loves her family but she can only count on them to a point so it's no surprise she matured quickly and has a natural courage to her.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her?

I was utterly confused but eager for more. I was afraid the book would take on a slow pace but it never did. Even with the gaps of interaction between them it's a page turner. I thought he was putting on a show for a bit. It all just confused and intrigued me even more.

4. What was your first explaination for the change in Edward's eye color?

I thought it was just mood but hungry vs. not is definitely better.

1. I really had no idea, anywhere

2.I admired Bella, that she had so much responsibillity for her family. I couldn't cook and clean and doing housework all day.

3. Hm, I didn't thought really much. I was just happy that Edward was there and speaking with Bella, and I was too fascinated by Bella's history. But now, I have to admit, it was a little bit strange.

4. Hm, I knew he was vampire and thought it was normal. And then, my eyes change too - brown if I'm happy and green if i'm angry - so it didn't seem that crazy to me.

1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished?

I thought he either really did hate her or he was curious about her. If he hated her, I figured he ran away to hide from her till he could get over it. If he was curious, I didn't have an explanation for why he ran away.

2. We learn a few things about Bella's parents in this chapter. Charlie can't cook - Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual?

This tells us that Bella can survive on her own if needed. She doesn't need a support system like her parents both seem to need.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her?

I was really surprised when Edward was all friendly to Bella. I figured maybe he got over whatever his problem was and he was learning to cope with it. I didn't so much see it as a show, but more of a struggle for him, trying to act like he was ohk with her. I figured, by the end of the class, that he still had a problem with her from the way he stormed out of class.

4. What was your first explaination for the change in Edward's eye color?
It really didn't faze me. I barely noticed it in the book. The second time I read it, I caught myself and I thought it to be his mood, despite me knowing the truth.

1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished?
I figured that Edward was just staying home, staying out of the way. I didn't imagine that he had actually gone anywhere. As far as to why he had vanished'.Bella. l still had no idea what about her would cause him to feel the need to avoid her but I had little doubt that she was the reason.

2. We learn a few things about Bella's parents in this chapter. Charlie can't cook -- Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual?
It made Bella appear very mature to me, to notice these faults in her own parents but not give them the same overly harsh judgment that so many teenagers use on their parents. She is also very self-sufficient and quite capable despite her rather noticeable lack of self-confidence in herself. This really improved Bella in my eyes, her ability to looks past all of these faults and still see her parents in such a kind light.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her?
I was shocked, stunned, completely at a loss. His polite demeanor came from out of nowhere for me. I didn't necessarily think that he was putting on a show, rather I believe that whatever it was about her that initially was a problem had been resolved. As if his time away had fixed the problem and he was all back to normal. Edward's new behavior didn't really change my thoughts about his initial reaction, just made me wonder more about what had caused it since it seemed to me that it must be an issue easily fixed by time away.

4. What was your first explanation for the change in Edward's eye color?
That Bella had imagined it. That when extremely angry Edward looked so dark that it was a way for Bella to identify with the darkness within him, not that his eyes were actually that color.

1. I disregarded WHERE he went, I just wanted him back.
2. Because of this, Bella is mature and independent. She has a sense of authority and is very trusted.
3. I was slightly angry with Bella. Though none of it was her fault, I was upset with how incoherent she was around him. I was almost positive that he was doing exactly what he had said, trying to make up for being so...hostile, even though that's not how he said it...that's what the "secret meaning" was, the meaning that the contributors of the conversation normally understand, because of previous situations. I'm not real big on first impressions, Even if somebody seems like the nicest person in the world, I wouldn't really like them or feel comfortable around them much until I knew more about them. (actually, I'd probably be like, you're TOO nice...YOU MUST BE A SERIAL KILLER!) It ADDED to my thoughts about him, developed them, and it made me happier...it made it more interesting, his going from hostile to polite.
4. I don't really remember what I thought, I'm pretty sure I had it right, though, because I've read a lot of other vampire books where the same thing happens

1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished?

hmmm... I thought he went just anywhere to get away from Bella

2. We learn a few things about Bella's parents in this chapter. Charlie can't cook - Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual?

She is very mature for her age, and has a lot of responsibilities.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her?

I was confused about the way he treated her, actually. No, I think he was really trying to be polite. At first I thought he didn't like her, then I wasn't so sure.

4. What was your first explaination for the change in Edward's eye color?

I have no idea... I'm just not that deep. ^.^

1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished? I honestly thought that he was cutting school just so he wouldn't have to see Bella, but I was seriously confused as to why he would do that.

2. We learn a few things about Bella's parents in this chapter. Charlie can't cook - Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual? It tells us that Bella is probably used to being in the position of having to take care of her parents, and those around her. She's nurturing.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her? At that point I was even more confused about the whole thing, my brain hurted, haha. I didn't think he was putting on a show, I thought he was just messing with her, at first, but it still didn't make sense why he was suddenly being nice. Mostly I was just confused.

4. What was your first explaination for the change in Edward's eye color? I thought that maybe his eye color changed when he was angry, or frustrated.

1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished?
I figured he was just skipping school b/c he was mad about not being able to change the schedule. Just needed time to "cool off"!

2. We learn a few things about Bella's parents in this chapter. Charlie can't cook - Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual?
Bella has to be the "adult" in her parents lives. Renee calls Bella an "old soul". Of course she is ... she's had to take care of two people who haven't quite seemed to be able to pull it together. Bella's had to grow up quick in order to take care of her parents.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her?
I thought that Edward was just trying to make the best of a bad situation.

4. What was your first explaination for the change in Edward's eye color?
Mood swings. When I'm angry, my eyes turn more brown than green. When I'm happy, they turn more green.
Do you sparkle in the sun?

1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished?
I didn't know, home? Far away? Wherever he went I was really annoyed that he was gone.

2. We learn a few things about Bella's parents in this chapter. Charlie can't cook - Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual?
Bella has grown up faster than other kids her age. She's obviously been taking care of her parents which has made her more mature as a person.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her?
I knew he had eaten something after he returned. I thought maybe he had settled down (hah!). I thought he was putting on a show, partly. It seemed like his words were genuine, but his motives were still unclear. His new behavior didn't really change the way I saw his initial reaction, since I had already decoded that.

4. What was your first explanation for the change in Edward's eye color?
That he'd eaten. I'm no fun am I?

Chapter Two: Open Book

1. Where did you think Edward had gone off to at the start of the chapter and why did you think he had vanished?

-I think Edward might've gone somewhere far away, like out of state or something. I felt as though he seemed intimidated by Bella's presence when he first saw her, so he was trying to get away from her for a while. I think he couldn't resist her so much so he had to get away for a while. Little did I know back then that he was a vampire, hahah.

2. We learn a few things about Bella's parents in this chapter. Charlie can't cook - Renee is rather needy and so on. What does this tell us about Bella as an individual?
-This tells me that Bella acts very mature for her age. At her age, she's able to care for her parents, almost as if she's the parent, cooking food for Charlie, then telling Renee where her blouse was after leaving it at the dry cleaners. She's very responsible for someone her age, and could be easily depended upon. She knows what to do and behave in certain situations.

3. What was your reaction to the polite way Edward treated Bella when he returned? Did you think he was putting on a show? How did it change your thoughts about his initial reaction to her?
-I was confused like Bella when Edward started being nice to him. I wondered if he was just playing it off, or if it was just really Bella who thought that he was acting mean to her that first day. It was really unexpected, I didn't see it coming. Hm, at first I thought he might be putting on a show, but later I kind of assumed that he really wanted to fix things between the two of them and that he should just re-introduce himself and change Bella's first impression of him. It was nice though. When he started being nice with Bella, I fell in love with him even more, haha. Although he kept making those 'mysterious' statements like 'Its better off if we weren't friends', him making the effort to befriend her was so nice.

4. What was your first explaination for the change in Edward's eye color?
-I thought his eye color changes accoring to his mood that day. It reminded me of those mood rings, haha. When he first met Bella, she mentions that they were black, then it changes to gold or whatever, so I thought that it changes with the way he's feeling that day. Never did I think it was because of his hunger!
