Chapter 16 - Carlisle

Post by Alphie »

The chapter summary can be found here

1. We learn quite a bit about the physiology of vampires in this chapter as Edward tells Carlisle's story. Which the most surprising thing you discovered - that they didn't need to breathe, that Carlisle tried to starve himself, or that they are very difficult to kill?

2. How did you feel about Edward's confession that he drank from humans for a short period of time? Were you surprised? Or were you more like Bella in thinking that it seemed reasonable? What do you think of his choice to kill only "bad" humans?

3. We get our first peek into Edward's room, which isn't really a bed room since it has no bed. Given the interest most fans have in all things romantic where these vampires are concerned, how long do you think it will take Edward to actually get a bed...if he ever gets one at all? Snigger...you know I had to ask!

4. Throughout the chapter, Edward is much MUCH more himself. He is very open with Bella and seems very comfortable around her. I understand that this is the day after their time in the meadow, but what do you think specfially changed between them that allows Edward to be so free all of a sudden?

Probably that they didn't need to breathe, but it was't that much of a shock because all of their body functions are shut down.

2. How did you feel about Edward's confession that he drank from humans for a short period of time? Were you surprised? Or were you more like Bella in thinking that it seemed reasonable? What do you think of his choice to kill only "bad" humans?

I wasn't surprised I'd assumed that he'd have slipped atleast one time in his life. I suppose I was more like Bella, I thought it was reasonable. As for his choice to only drink from bad humans it's better than drinking from the innocent.

3. We get our first peek into Edward's room, which isn't really a bed room since it has no bed. Given the interest most fans have in all things romantic where these vampires are concerned, how long do you think it will take Edward to actually get a bed...if he ever gets one at all? HE NEEDS TO GET A BED!!!!!I think he will definetely get one, I just don't have any idea when he will buy one. But he needs to I will be very disappointed if he doesn't get a bed. And he'd better!

4. Throughout the chapter, Edward is much MUCH more himself. He is very open with Bella and seems very comfortable around her. I understand that this is the day after their time in the meadow, but what do you think specfially changed between them that allows Edward to be so free all of a sudden?

That he's finally told her just how he feels, and she's met his family and is not afraid of them. That she actually likes the despite what they are.

I think I was most surprised by the fact that Carlisle tried to kill himself. I mean, I can understand why he tried, but he's a religious man, and I just didn't think he would try to do something like that.

2. How did you feel about Edward's confession that he drank from humans for a short period of time? Were you surprised? Or were you more like Bella in thinking that it seemed reasonable? What do you think of his choice to kill only "bad" humans?

I agreed with Bella. It sounds reasonable. He just wanted to try something new. I think it was better for him to only hunt "bad" humans, but I still think being a 'vegetarian' is the best way to go.

3. We get our first peek into Edward's room, which isn't really a bed room since it has no bed. Given the interest most fans have in all things romantic where these vampires are concerned, how long do you think it will take Edward to actually get a bed...if he ever gets one at all? Well hopefully it won't take long! Because we all know that he won't need a bed until Bella's a vampire too!

4. Throughout the chapter, Edward is much MUCH more himself. He is very open with Bella and seems very comfortable around her. I understand that this is the day after their time in the meadow, but what do you think specfially changed between them that allows Edward to be so free all of a sudden?

I think that since he introduced her to his family and she knows more about his lifestyle he feels more relaxed around her.

Carlisle trying to starve himself was the most surprising. He doesn't seem like the self-destructive type. Also, I never really thought that a vampire would try to kill themselves.

2. How did you feel about Edward's confession that he drank from humans for a short period of time? Were you surprised? Or were you more like Bella in thinking that it seemed reasonable? What do you think of his choice to kill only "bad" humans?

To be honest, I wasn't too surprised. It seems reasonable for a vampire to drink blood. I mean, I wouldn't want to be the victim, but blood is their food like chicken is human food. The part with him killing "bad" humans just shows us that Edward is really good at heart.

3. We get our first peek into Edward's room, which isn't really a bed room since it has no bed. :P :P :P :P :P :P SOON! :P :P :P :P :P :P

I think he's finally decided that she is the one for him and that he can be with her. He tried to stay away before, but now he fully accepts that he needs her. Also, he knows that Bella won't be scared of anything he does.

1. Actually, I wasn't too surprised at any of them...but I had to reevaluate Carlisle after I learned that he tried to kill himself, so I gues that was the most surprising.

2. My reaction was like Bella's...it's reasonable and it also explains why he's so proud of himself, that he can resist her blood.

3. Of course I think he should get a bed!!!!   But, I don't know, that would be kind of awkward, Edward having the only bed in the house...and his father and mother figure knowing why, so the more feasible option is to use Bella's...but there's still Charlie- rats! Someone needs to kidnap him for a while!  8)

4. Like he said in the meadow, his mind's made up, no second chances, no turning back. And the relief of Bella knowing how he feels about her. You ever kept something from someone you really care about? It's hard to do, and you're a bit strung up the whole time, but when you tell them, there's a release. Such a complicated emotion as love must have been really hard.
I could feel his marble body against every line of mine, and I was so glad he hadn't listened to me-there was no pain in the world that would have justified missing this.

ARRRGGHH!!! And I was sooo ready to pop him in the mouth! And then he went all...Edward.

oops...really sorry about the double post...won't do it again, I promise

more or less the fact that carlisle tried to starve himself. i read lots of vampire books before and i knew that its not that easy to starve one

2. How did you feel about Edward's confession that he drank from humans for a short period of time? Were you surprised? Or were you more like Bella in thinking that it seemed reasonable? What do you think of his choice to kill only "bad" humans?

edward is an amazing....person even when he fed on humans! i was deffinatly like bella in thinking it was resonable.

3. We get our first peek into Edward's room, which isn't really a bed room since it has no bed. id say when ever he changes bella TEEHEE!!!!!

4. Throughout the chapter, Edward is much MUCH more himself. He is very open with Bella and seems very comfortable around her. I understand that this is the day after their time in the meadow, but what do you think specfially changed between them that allows Edward to be so free all of a sudden?

well when people spend time together they become more comfortable with eachother. edward hadent left her since before the medow...two days before.

That they don't need to breathe'"lucky duckies! That would sure come in handy, especially when swimming, haha. I sort of figured they'd be damn near impossible to kill from the get-go, so that one wasn't much of a shocker. Carlisle trying to kill myself by starvation also didn't surprise me much; he's just the type to abhor evil things, and as a broad classification, vampires are evil, so it only makes sense that he'd try to kill himself upon learning that he was 'evil.'

2. How did you feel about Edward's confession that he drank from humans for a short period of time? Were you surprised? Or were you more like Bella in thinking that it seemed reasonable? What do you think of his choice to kill only "bad" humans?

I wasn't very surprised; I agreed with Bella in that it seemed reasonable. As for his choice of killing only 'bad' humans, well, that seemed reasonable, too, not to mention very Edward-like. Even when he's doing 'bad' things, he's never a 'bad' guy, if that makes any type of convoluted sense at all.

3. We get our first peek into Edward's room, which isn't really a bedroom, since it has no bed. Given the interest most fans have in all things romantic where these vampires are concerned, how long do you think it will take Edward to actually get a bed...if he ever gets one at all? Snigger...you know I had to ask!

All I can say is that if and when he does get a bed, it'll be because of Bella in one way or another, haha.

4. Throughout the chapter, Edward is much, MUCH more himself. He is very open with Bella and seems very comfortable around her. I understand that this is the day after their time in the meadow, but what do you think specifically changed between them that allows Edward to be so free all of a sudden?

The fact that he doesn't have to hide anything from her anymore is probably the main factor behind his freeness. That, and he's just so happy, so in love. :D

You are VERY right! There are three other couples in that house with not much to do at night other than...well...you get my meaning. And they are such perfectly matched couples, too. Right from the start, before I read anything extra from Stephenie, I had Rose amd Emmett pegged as love bunnies. So SOMEONE in that house has a bed! LOL!
