Chapter 14 - Mind Over Matter

Post by Alphie »

The chapter summary can be cound here

1. What were your first thoughts about Edward's age and human history? Were you creeped out at all that he was so very much older than she was?

2. Edward tells Bella very little about the process of becoming a vampire. Why do you think he chose to keep this from her when he is being so very open about everything else?

3. We learn that many vampires are gifted with supernatural traits. Stephenie has told us that vampires are drawn to special humans, and therefore when those humans become vampires, their special qualities are enhanced. If that is the case, I simply must ask the question everyone one of us has asked at some point. If Bella were to become a vampire, what would her trait be? And is it possible for her to not have any special trait at all?

4. Edward lets it out that he's been watching Bella as she sleeps. Again, did this creep you out or make you fall even harder for Edward?

5. Edward says two possibly conflicting things in this chapter. First, he explains that in the last few days, he has put mind over matter and has been able to control his thirst for her - that the temptation isn't as strong. He later says that he doesn't think it would ever be possible for them to have an intimate relationship because it would be too difficult for him to control himself. Do you think he's being honest with himself, or do you think he's just trying to protect Bella again?

6. Along those same lines, we learn that both Edward and Bella have never had a real relationship with another person before this. Many people have debated the issue of Edward's virginity, and that has been put to rest by Stephenie herself. Did you think that maybe Edward had been intimate before, he just hadn't had a real serious relationship with anyone he loved, or did you get it right from the start that he was just as innocent as Bella was in this matter?

1. I was definitely in awe, and then i was like, ok. I didn't get creeped out about his age because he fits in with Bella so well, it doesn't really matter. At least, to me.
2.I think he doesn't tell Bella much about being a vampire because he doesn't want her getting any ideas of trying to be with him forever, although we know at the end of twilight, it's what she wants.
3. Someone said this but i don't know who- that Bella could see into someone's soul or something because she was so perceptive. No, i definitely think Bella will have a 'super-skill'. lol.
4. Oh please. I fell even more in love than i already was.
5.I think he's trying to tell himself that to protect Bella, and also himself. He probably hasn't had much knowledge of his capabilities with bella at that point.
6. I had a feeling right from the start he was just as new to relationships as bella was. and i hope i'm dead on.

1. What were your first thoughts about Edward's age and human history? Were you creeped out at all that he was so very much older than she was?

No not at all, after all he was just mature, but then so was Bella. I thought his history was rather interesting, but I thought that he would have been older than her really was. Hearing about his human life, even faguely was pretty cool if I do say so myself.

2. Edward tells Bella very little about the process of becoming a vampire. Why do you think he chose to keep this from her when he is being so very open about everything else?

Well, if she knows how to become a vampire then she might just go out and have someone bite her. He wants her to live out her life as a human, he didn't even want to place the idea of how she could become a vampire in her head. I mean now that she know it's always there sitting in the back of her mind. Edward wants to protect her from becomeing what he is at all costs from what I can tell....duh. He wasn't all that open in the book though, he seems to always be keeping things from Bella, or telling half of the story. I think that their relationship would be better if they were both more open with the other and communicated more. I think.

I think that it could be possible that she wouldn't have a trait because they say that these very special traits are rare, but it isn't likely that she won't get one. I'm sure Stephenie gets a kick out of us not knowing and you and her both are about to burst at the seems Alphie, I don't know how you keep quiet all this time. I would kill me. Anyway, I have a feeling she's get an abilitly....what it will be...well, I have my theories. Seriously though, I need to think about it more.

4. Edward lets it out that he's been watching Bella as she sleeps. Again, did this creep you out or make you fall even harder for Edward?

It would have been creepy had it been anyone, but Edward. To me it seemed so sweet that in the hours of the night when he could do anything he wanted he decided to watch Bella as she dreamed.

Hmm... I believe he has Bella's safety in mind. Sure, he might be better in controling the thirst he feels for her, but that doesn't mean that it's gone. Not only that he has to worry about crushing her when he hold her. To Edward Bella is the most fragile and precious thing to him, it would only make since that he would try his absolute hardest to protect her.

I never really thought about it, I knew at least that he had never loved anyone before like he loves Bella. Truly, I thought he might of had some expiriance, but nothing that would have really made a difference to their relationship.

1. What were your first thoughts about Edward's age and human history? Were you creeped out at all that he was so very much older than she was?
No not really, as a vampire it was kind of expected that he would be so much older.

2. Edward tells Bella very little about the process of becoming a vampire. Why do you think he chose to keep this from her when he is being so very open about everything else?
I believe that Edward wants to keep Bella the way she is- human. If by explaining the vampire process it would make her too curious. I think he is probably worried that she would then just say 'bite me already!' and he doesn't want to deal with that. (But we all know this comes up at the end of the book)

I have no idea what her special trait would be; though I am guessing it has to do with her mind since Edward can't read it. I have a feeling through that whatever it is her special trait will probably be as powerful as Edward's or even Alice's.

4. Edward lets it out that he's been watching Bella as she sleeps. Again, did this creep you out or make you fall even harder for Edward?
My heart melted when I read that scene! There is something so sweet and kind of innocent about watching someone who you care for just sleep. Hahah the only quote I can illustrate this with is from 'Dawson's Creek' when the grandmother says that: 'You know you are in love with someone when you can just watch them sleep all night.' I think we can safely say that Edward fits into this category.

I think it's a bit of both; he probably can't be with Bella that way (at least as shes human) because she is fragile and if he were to get over-excited he probably could really physically hurt her. He wants to protect her above all things so the option of being 'together' is out.

I think when it comes to this Bella and Edward are actually on level playing field. They are both rather innocent and unsure of themselves; something I think is quite sweet as they get to experience these feelings for the first time together. :D

1. What were your first thoughts about Edward's age and human history? Were you creeped out at all that he was so very much older than she was?
I thought that he could be older than over hundred years old, so I didn't freeked when I heard how old he really was.

2. Edward tells Bella very little about the process of becoming a vampire. Why do you think he chose to keep this from her when he is being so very open about everything else?
I think he just doesn't want to tell her because he might think that after she has discovered how to transform into a vampire she might be enough crazy for doing that. Maybe he knows already that Alice has seen Bella as vampire and want's to stop her by telling so little about that.

It is really hard for think of what her trait could be, but I suggest it would be a little like what Esme's trait is. So she could have strong emotions or something like that. It's possible that she doesn't have any traits..

4. Edward lets it out that he's been watching Bella as she sleeps. Again, did this creep you out or make you fall even harder for Edward?
I fell in love Edward even more than I already was. It's just at the same time so sweet and so scary to think that someone comes to your house and watches you sleeping every single night. If I were her I'd thought that he must've been so strong with that feeling about resisting Bella's smell. She was sleeping all that time in her room without having any clue of Edward being there and still he could have killed her, but no. He just listened she talking asleep. Awww, he's just too cute to be scared at.. Can't help with that.

I think he knows what he can do and what not and same time he possibly protects her. He's afraid of that idea he might hurt her if they have something intimate and then some day they brake up.

6. Along those same lines, we learn that both Edward and Bella have never had a real relationship with another person before this. Many people have debated the issue of Edward's virginity, and that has been put to rest by Stephenie herself. Did you think that maybe Edward had been intimate before, he just hadn’t had a real serious relationship with anyone he loved, or did you get it right from the start that he was just as innocent as Bella was in this matter?
Of course he is innocent! He isn't that kind of guy who gets drunk and sleeps with every woman around 3 miles. No, he's been waiting all that time to have something serious enough to take a next step in the relationship.

OK, these were a little bit longer answer than I thought they would be, but it doesn't matter. I just said all that came in my mind.

1) I was glad to finally know about his history. Him being 104 didn't matter much either, I thought he'd be a lot older, just the way he talked and acted, and seemingly knowing everything (in class that is ^^)

2) He doesn't want her to want to become one herself.

3) Honestly, I'm not sure, but I do want to know why Edward can't read her mind. Jasper and Alice's "talent" worked on her...I'm not sure what her's could be, but I think she'd definately get one.

4)it was sweet! *loved him more**

5) He cares for Bella alot, and is afraid he might not be able to control himself then, and doesn't want to risk it.

6) I assumed he was innocent too.
So little posts! However, I've been here on the forums every day for about 2 years... reading. *SIGHS* If only my rating would reflect how many times I'm on this site a day---even if I don't always log in.

1. What were your first thoughts about Edward's age and human history? Were you creeped out at all that he was so very much older than she was?

I thought "well that's the reason for his old fashion maneurisms" Definatley not creeped out by the fact that he was older, since he was still really seventeen though he was just wiser.

2. Edward tells Bella very little about the process of becoming a vampire. Why do you think he chose to keep this from her when he is being so very open about everything else?

Edward, I think, is keeping the gory details from Bella because at this point, he already decided that the vampires lifestyle wasn't right for Bella, and that he was determined for her to live. Maybe he didn't want her to run away screaming.

I really don't see any trait that would stick out, or be enhanced from Bella turning into a vampire. Unless her clumsiness was enhanced, but I think that'd be pretty horrible! haha. Well I think possible she could have the power to have people trust her really easily or persuade people to always believe her...I mean she was trusted with the big secret!

4. Edward lets it out that he's been watching Bella as she sleeps. Again, did this creep you out or make you fall even harder for Edward?

I started smiling to myself to the point where my cheeks hurt, and I was sighing thinking about how adorable...weird, yet adorable it was. In my eyes Edward could do no wrong, and that just made me more completely infatuated with him.

Do you think he's being honest with himself, or do you think he's just trying to protect Bella again?

...I think he's just trying to protect Bella, he couldn't live with hurting her, and he knows how breakable she is...he couldn't let her do anything that would possible endanger her.

I've never really doubted his "innocence". He seems thoroughly uninterested in every girl he sees, because he can see their shallow minds and probably how they're planning to seduce him. I think he then lost a lot of his human feelings for a long time and Bella resurected them in him.

1. What were your first thoughts about Edward's age and human history? Were you creeped out at all that he was so very much older than she was?

i thought he was pretty old, but acctually older than he really was in the book! HOW COULD YOU BE CREEPED OUT BY EDWARD IN ANY WAY!!!!

2. Edward tells Bella very little about the process of becoming a vampire. Why do you think he chose to keep this from her when he is being so very open about everything else?

because he doesnt want her to become a vampire DUH!

3. We learn that many vampires are gifted with supernatural traits. If that is the case, I simply must ask the question everyone one of us has asked at some point. If Bella were to become a vampire, what would her trait be? And is it possible for her to not have any special trait at all?

well the thought that comes to everyones head first is bella is ridiculiously clumsy.. but i dont see how that could be enhanced because it is an imperfection. i think itll be something like her sense of smell would be amazing or she could have a built in lie detector because she always can tell when someone doesnt tell the truth.

4. Edward lets it out that he's been watching Bella as she sleeps. Again, did this creep you out or make you fall even harder for Edward?

FALL EVEN HARDER!!! HES SO AMAZING! haha wow im a little obsessed

Do you think he's being honest with himself, or do you think he's just trying to protect Bella again?

i think he doesnt understand his limitations, but he knows how bella reacts to stuff like that. it would only be a matter of time before her throat would win out. Hellooooo you gotta understand that edward has a predatory side that could pop out at anytime!!! hes gotta be careful!

6. Along those same lines, we learn that both Edward and Bella have never had a real relationship with another person before this. Many people have debated the issue of Edward's virginity, and that has been put to rest by Stephenie herself. Did you think that maybe Edward had been intimate before, he just hadn't had a real serious relationship with anyone he loved, or did you get it right from the start that he was just as innocent as Bella was in this matter?

i think he was just as innocent really. he acts like it in the book. hes just so cute! he says himself that lust always acompanies love for him.

1. What were your first thoughts about Edward's age and human history? Were you creeped out at all that he was so very much older than she was?
No, Bella can handle it. She seems mature and like an old soul herself. Edward's also been through so much, it's amazing. The two are fit for each other.

2. Edward tells Bella very little about the process of becoming a vampire. Why do you think he chose to keep this from her when he is being so very open about everything else?
He doesn't want to encourage her. Or frighten her. Or give her any ideas about vampires. I think he's still a little undecided on what he wants.

Well, it may sound a bit farfetched but I think Bella's special gift might be her humanity. She might still be able to blush, give off body heat, and so on. Retain her human characteristics.

4. Edward lets it out that he's been watching Bella as she sleeps. Again, did this creep you out or make you fall even harder for Edward?
I think it's adorable! In any other guy it would be creepy and stalkerish. But we all know Edward wouldn't do anything but watch her. He's a gentleman.

I think it's a combination of both. Sure, Edward's restraining himself and getting better at it, but the temptation could be too strong to resist forever without turning Bella. By honestly confessing these things he's trying to protect both himself and Bella, I think.

If Edward ever did have a relationship with someone in the past (which I optimistically doubt) I don't think it was serious. Definitely not as serious as how he feels about Bella. And even with his strong feelings for Bella, they haven't been intimate. The two of them are so sweet and innocent, which is adorable considering how mature and knowing they each are in other ways.

1. What were your first thoughts about Edward's age and human history? Were you creeped out at all that he was so very much older than she was?
not at all. As an immortal being, he's not going to show any signs of age except getting more mature over the years. All part and parcel of being a vampire. Though it must be a very strange sensation to be talking to someone who looks so young, but is really over a century old! It wouldn't bother me, but it sure would make me feel like I was in the Twilight Zone. I also wondered what his personality was like as a human.

2. Edward tells Bella very little about the process of becoming a vampire. Why do you think he chose to keep this from her when he is being so very open about everything else?
Now that I've read the whole book, I think that he felt that, by telling her, he would be reminded of the vision that Alice had of Bella being turned into a vampire, and it upset him, so he was trying to avoid the subject.

I think that she would have the same gift as Edward, or at least something similar, because she's already extremely perceptive as a human

4. Edward lets it out that he's been watching Bella as she sleeps. Again, did this creep you out or make you fall even harder for Edward?
haha. it was cute! it showed just how much he loved her. I wouldn't mind if he did that to me!

Definitely being protective, because as he says, if they were to do that he would surely end up crushing her by accident. He knew that, in order to keep her safe, he would have to draw the line somewhere. He has no doubt that he wants her for his girlfriend and that he can resist her blood.

I certainly didn't rule out that possibility. He's had many years to do things like that, so it could have happened. Also, we don't know very much about his human life at all.
