Why would Aro keep Alec around if his power was to change vampires into humans. Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the Volturri. They love their vampire world.

Laurent was important to the story. He is the one who told Bella that Victoria was still after her. She would not have known until later in the book with Jacob, that she was once again being hunted.

The saying misery loves company comes to mind. Leah wants jake and everyone else to be as miserable as she is. She will push everyones buttons until she brings all of them down with her. Bella did a better job getting over her heartbreak than Leah.
