Bella Growing more Mature
Assuming that it is Bella talking in the Preface, what do you think about the different tone in the preface and the first chapter?

She has definitely matured and it's about time! Since Eclipse finally focused her mind 100% on Edward, she isn't having the distractions of Jacob Black getting in the way of their love. In the first chapter, she still worries about Jake and thinks of his absense, but the difference is, she doesn't dwell on it so much that she hurts Edward in the process and can't focus fully on him. I really like that her "happy place" is Edward and that nothing can disturb her there. I'm really proud of Bella. She should be waaay more likable in Breaking Dawn . Maturity and all.
Edward squeezed me gently. "I'm here." I drew a breath. That was true. Edward was here, with his arms around me. I could face anything as long as that was true. I squared my shoulders and walked forward to meet fate, with my destiny solidly at my side.

I agree, she's definately maturing. But it's her age as much as anything. She's certain of her path, and because she's thought it all through, she's a little calmer.
And that shows maturity.

AGREED! you can so tell that she isn't this girl who wants to be a vampire, she knows what she is losing and she knows what she is gaining. I feel like some proud sister. I guess that's why the writing style changed a bit, the happy place was hilarious. She really is growing up *tear* I mean that above quote said it all. But I always thought she was likable and relatable, but that is me starting to ramble so I will stop nowBloodlust wrote:She has definitely matured and it's about time! I didn't really notice anything....I guess she has changed abit, what with her allowing edward to give her the car and card.

That was more the compromise, she has no say in anything anymore because of the deal.Bella_S_Black wrote:I didn't really notice anything....I guess she has changed abit, what with her allowing edward to give her the car and card.

Thank you for setting up this thread!
I think Bella has matured in leaps and bounds between the end of Eclipse and the first Chapter of Breaking Dawn. Eclipse was really a coming of age story, Bella was faced with some tough decisions. At the beginning of BD it seems that Bella has matured into those decisions and seems to be living the life she choose. THis is further evidenced by her wearing the ring, having the "black credit card" - (coincidently is this the famous no limit American Express card that they mentioned on Jessica's Simpsons MTV show?) and driving the car Edward purchased for her. I think the Bella in Twilight or New Moon would have made Edward buy her a more sensible car - like a Ford or Toyota and she would not be wearing the ring as "everyday" jewelery.

You know, now that I think about it...I do believe that Bella has matured a bit. When I was reading the part about the posters I was a bit scared...I was thinking..."ohh no, ohh no...She's going to start freaking out and crash that amazing car."
I'm glad to see that she has finally made up her mind about what she truly wants in her life and has stuck to it. Yes, like you guys have already mentioned, she is still sad that Jacob is gone and that he might not come back home but that is not getting in the way of her wedding plans.
I just wish that she was a little more happy for her wedding. I would be.
But, I understand where she is coming from.

is she really more mature?
Bella is more mature now,if you look back at the other books,
you can clearly see it.
In twilight, she was to impulsive for certain things and didn't think things through.(the whole James Incident) she could have
done things differently if she thought it through.I know given the situation thats hard to do, but still.
In new moon, the way she reacted to Edward leaving her was to
be expected.Edward was her first Love. But as jacob said, she was healing. Not that she would ever truely be the same as before he let,but she would have been happy. She learned that
she was stronger than she thought she was.Though she won't
admit it.
And in Eclipse, and this is where she really matures,She realizes
that she can't have everything. She Finally understands what she is giving up by deciding to become a vampire and being with Edward. She also learns the value of compromise, you might not get exactly what you want, the way you want it.She also
learns to understand Edwards side of certain things.
So bella is more mature for realizing important things about her
self, her mortal life, accepting things and learning to compromise
you can clearly see it.
