The Caves

Lots of people have been asking about the caves on a few different levels and I thought we could just put them together. So use this area to talk about the lay out of the caves as well as the role the caves play re relating to the lived of the humans who call them home - meaning the rules and society compared to taht of the aliens.

The one realization that really struck me was the V/Y setup for the entrance/exit to the caves. I think it was really neat for SM to put it like that, and the cleverness still doesn't fail to impress me. That was another epiphany moment. xD It does make sense, though. Why would you trace around the outside of the V when it would be quicker to go around the inside. No one would ever find the exit like that. =P

I think while reading through the book the first time, I didn't take enough time to try and picture the layout of the caves in my head, I was just reading so quickly excited by the plot. I would like to go back and take the time to figure it out though. It seems Stephenie took the time to really think it out. I was able to picture individual rooms pretty well, but not there relation to each other as well at all. I wish she would put up like a floor plan or something on her site and maybe save my brain the strain.

I'm with you on the floor plan, I'm rereading now and trying to make a rough map, but it's still difficult

Aside from that... I SO want to live there!! Granted, I doubt it's all that glamourous, but it sounds so neat. GO JEB!!

And I want to sleep altogether in the one room when it rains

I live in New Mexico, and we have TONS of volcanic formations here, for those of you who don't know. I wish I could describe what the inside of lava tubes look like to you all (I didn't just make that up, did I? Jeb said that at the very least a portion of the caves were lava tubes?) We also have caverns, the sorts of caves that everyone pictures. They are very different, but also the same...I'm rambling. It was difficult to picture such an extensive system, at any rate. I sort of see it as a wheel, the center (where the carrots are planted) surrounded by a lot of spokes (varying in size, obviously) but I don't know which way is north and which is south from there...this frustrated me when I read the novel.

I'm pretty sure I picture the caves incorrectly. I only have a couple experiences with caves as a reference. I am re-reading the book right now and I have noticed, now that I am picking up more details the second time around, that I had even pictured some of the details of the cave completely opposite from how they were described in the book.

It's a very thorough image in my mind, just incorrect. lol

i ended up picturing caves as the same and then was visualizing the "hospital wing" differently every time. i too read the book uber fast and need to reread it ASAP...well as soon as all of my friends finish borrowing it. i agree with the wheel idea. pretty good visual overall though.

I viewed the caves like a main sectional with branches going off, leading to the larger rooms, and then from there the living quarters.

The entire bathing/sanitary systems, I thought, were all cleverly done. I could picture those really easily.

I totally agree, they were the easiest thing for me to visualize. very descriptive in every way.

This seems like a good thread to put this under:

I was wondering how everyone thinks they would do living in the caves the way they do in the book. I was thinking about it, and even though it isn't, of course, like someone said above, glamorous, I'm thinking it'd have to be a little fun. I could just imagine myself there with my siblings and friends...unfortunately for those there, we'd cause so much trouble...and even though the whole...world's-been-taken-over-by-peace-loving-body-snatchers-thing would be a downer...it seems like it'd be fun to live in the caves with all these people...doing what you can to contribute equally to the community and all...

I don't know...what do you guys think?
