When i read the prologue I was kind of wondering why it was so important that the Wanderer was placed in her.....im still a little confused...was it because they wanted to find if there were any more humans??because that's what i thought.

I think that they knew that Melanie was going to be difficult to deal with and that they needed a strong soul to deal with her. The souls wanted to find out about the human resistance, and since they had found Melanie, a human, they knew she would have the info they wanted.
